Re: Discovery channel...Can a non pilot land a B747 ?
re 70g's....nothing wrong with that...encountering 70 g's = bad.

Most non-pilots can barely drive cars.
I'm thinkin' it's crashy-time.

Re: Discovery channel...Can a non pilot land a B747 ?
I think I saw this on Mythbusters already. Adam and Jamie go into a sim, try to land and crash. Then they get talked through it from a guy playing the role of ATC and land the airplane safely.
What they don't tell you is, unlike most movies where flight attendants and pax land the airplane with the help of ATC, most air traffic controllers are NOT multi thousand hour simulator instructors on the exact airplane you happen to be trying to land... unlike the "controller" that help the mythbusters (who was).
I think that is the major obstacle right there. But of course most of the public believe that airplanes are flown by autopilots, computers and air traffic controllers. How airplanes didn't fall out of the sky when I was working in the arctic with no autopilot or ATC, I don't know.
But then again, I've never been able to land the sim.

My online guide shows Discovery covering Martian landing this coming Sunday. Are we talking about the same thing?
Re: Discovery channel...Can a non pilot land a B747 ?
There was a show on UK tv a while back where they had this guy on that was a total sim geek. He had a cockpit set up at home. He had bags of sim time on light aircraft. They put him into a Cherokee and he was all over the place. Did a bunch of circuits with him as well as some airwork and he was lost.
As for the B747, it should be a piece of cake.

I heard Doc challenged Lance Armstrong to a testicle competition and won by three.

This kind of experiment is already being conducted on the other side of the world. Trans Maldivian Airways will hire you to fly a twin otter on floats in the ocean with 2000 hrs total time and 500 hours on floats. As the skipper!!
My money is on Adam and Jamie pulling it off!
As for you, Kafufo, what you "earn" and what you get paid are two different things. You certainly don't "earn" any respect with comments like that, or with your spelling.

Re: Discovery channel...Can a non pilot land a B747 ?
Love those Doc comments, I have been a long time reader 2nd time writer. I usually just pass over any comment made by doc, his holier then thou comments provide nothing.
I espicially enjoyed the comment about the pilot who was facing termination because of an accidental discharge of his weapon (U.S, he was legally allowed to carry) in the cockpit. There was little information provided about the circumstances that led to the accident. But as usuall Doc goes on to say that the pilot should acccept his termination and move on, he then says, he has experience with guns, and they don't just go off by accident. Are we to beleive that because Doc has handled firearms, and tells us that an accidental discharge cannot happen, that he must be right? and the pilot should just accept his fate?

Re: Discovery channel...Can a non pilot land a B747 ?
I 'vagely' remember a discussion I had years ago with a AC pilot who claimed they had had a bunch of non pilots in a 747 Sim on some open house day and that the only person that could land was some 12 year old kid with a zillion hours mucking with FS.
Anyway thanks for the heads up, will be fun to watch that show.

Could we have a seperate forum for Doc bashing, Cat Driver bashing, CID bashing, Hedley bashing, Widow bashing, etc?

You should have a "seperate" forum for chronic mis-spellers, too, Widow.

Re: Discovery channel...Can a non pilot land a B747 ?
OK. I'm guilty. But it should be a separate forum for chronic complainers. If we had a separate forum for chronic mis-spellers, you would be the only one left here.

widow, mis-spelling a word is one thing, but missing a period can be worse.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Oh come on, my comment was funny. I flew with Doc for almost three years and I know he's the last guy that would take himself serious.
I wonder if he'd push up the four throttles and exclaim" Release the hounds!"
