If you are looking for 1's so you can do your instructors rating, I would have to recommend you don't go to Empire. Though they have 4 Class 1's on staff, all of them are booked solid through the summer.

Peninsulair in YHM and we are taking on instructor candidates. Call Alan Frosst, 905-679-4165 for details.

hazatude,

thanks for the info but I hear that Alan Frosst does not have time for instructor ratings as he is too busy doing flight tests. I hear that any instuctor students must go with his schedule and not the other way around, this does not sound good but thanks anyways for the info but I don't think peninsulair is a good flight school regarding doing your instructor rating.

paokara, you'll get a lot more information if you pick up a phone and call these schools and ask them about it rather than here.
I talked to Spectrum in Burlington a week or two ago and was told they were doing it. Brantford's not doing there's anymore so don't try with them.

Dr. Frosst is not the only one doing instructor ratings at Peninsulair.

If you had the chance would you fly with a class 1 like 3 to 4 times a week at another school other than the one that you will be employed or would you train at the school that will give you the instructing job but the class 1 there only guarantees 2 days a week to train. My dillema is I need to finish the class 4 ASAP but don't know which one of the two to choose. The school that will give me employment but will only train me 2 days a week or the other guy at the other school but can give me 4 days a week.

any suggestions. I need only like 15 hours to finish up as I have done the written and all the ground school.

suggestions please :prayer: :prayer:

This question is a little like the LSAT, had to read it several times over before grabbing another beer.

IMO you should go where you can finish it the quickest. You're going to able to get a job instructing anywhere, so I wouldn't worry too much about your job situation.

I, like others here I expect, am having a hard time understanding this whole situation. Six weeks ago, you asked about schools, and got an answer. Flying 1.0 per each of the two days available each week since then, you would have been done, had you only troubled to pay attention to the questions you posed. Now, suddenly you need to do this ASAP?

In the first scenario you raise: the guy who does your training will hire you and be your supervisor will do your training. But only two days a week. Did you think to ask whether they could give you 2 bookings a day? Did you ask whether the other class I could do the final review or a portion of the training on one of the other days?

In the second, some as yet un-named school can train you at a higher rate of speed, but then won't hire you?

Perhaps you don't have the distance to look at those two choices objectively. From the outside, it is a no-brainer.

The internet is a wonderful invention, and a useful tool. It seems to me that in this case, it might well be supplemented by getting off your ass, and driving to the airport, with a list of questions. Go to each of the schools, pose the same sort of questions you have spent the last six weeks posing to total strangers, and go make a decision.

just curious, the person that I switched to train with and the school he is affiliated won't hire me as they just trained new instructors. During this training another school calls me and asks me how my training is going and if I was willing to work at this other school. I told them I was still working on the instructor rating. The CFI of the school that called me told me they have a class 1 that is willing to come in 2 days a week and yes I could ask to do 2 flights a day and the same CFI told me that If I decided to do this with them I could not get trained on other days from the instructor that I have now which has alot more time for me to complete the rating even though these guys won't hire me which is no problem as there are other schools which are looking.

This is why I am asking, do I stick with the guy that I have now which has more time as this other school that called me really wants instructors and they told me to hurry up with the rating but could only give me a class 1 that can work with me only 2 days a week. Which of the two makes more sense.

thanks and I don't mean to sound like an idiot but with the shortage of class 1s out there it is a bit frustrating to find one that has time on their hands and not doing flight tests all the time.

sorry for sounding dumb

Now this is getting really confusing. Get going with one that is going to work for you and get going with it now.
All schools are hiring and before you are finished this may not be the case. You dont have to stick with a school who happens to offer a job. Most if not all schools are currently hiring. You should knock 15 hrs out in a week or 10 days so consider taking a week off from work to get done.Time for another cold one.

All right then. Given what you've just said, get the rating done as soon as you can. Should take about two weeks. Go to one of the 80 or so schools that are looking for instructors, and get to work. If initially you are short of cash, go to the one nearest you that is hiring.

A straight Class IV may not be worth much on the big scheme of things, but people fom Newfoundland to BC are looking for you right now.

so just curious,

should I ask the school that wants to finish my rating and employ me after to also pay for part of the rating? Is that too pushy for me to ask, they are 6 instructors short for the cadet program and they need 6 to do it, so desperation is in.

thanks

How many cadets do they have coming in?

If it's a dozen or so, and they have no instructors yet, why not? This wouldn't have happened 20 years ago, or even a year ago. All they can say is no, and even if they did, there are schools getting cadets all across the country, without enough instructors. Greenwood on the east coast, and comox on the west.

Keep in mind that a school that needs at least 6 new instructors 3.5 weeks from now raises a few points / questions:

1. You will be worked like a dog, becuase if things are as bad as you say there won't be enough guys.
2. If there's not enough 1's now, how do you feel about cramming 4 cadets through in 6 weeks with as equally little supervision of your new class 4 rating.
3. Why don't they have enough instructors? Do they pay shit and treat their existing and/or previous instructors like shit?
4. Has this CFI ever done Cadets before, how long have they been there?

My point is, maybe this isn't the best place for you to get a start when everyone needs instructors right now. Take a few extra weeks and get a job somewhere that has their act together. And students 6 weeks from now. Cadets used to be great to get a lot of flight time, but now everyone needs instructors for year round students. The headaches of 15 hour days pushing cadets through is no longer worth it.

If you get that sketchy feeling in your stomach, listen to it.
