Air Canada fills even more seats

Carrier credits streamlined fare structure with helping it set record

By BRENT JANG
TRANSPORTATION REPORTER
Tuesday, January 11, 2005 - Page B8

Air Canada's passenger loads rose last month, as the carrier credited its simplified fare system for helping set another record for filling seats.

The Montreal-based airline's load factor, or proportion of available seats filled, averaged 75.2 per cent in December at its mainline operations, up from 72 per cent in the same month in 2003.

The latest load factor marked the ninth consecutive record of new monthly highs for Air Canada.

For the full 12 months of 2004, the carrier's load factor averaged 77.5 per cent, compared with 73.8 per cent in 2003.

Air Canada, which emerged last September from 18 months of bankruptcy protection, said yesterday that it managed to control growth in its capacity while luring passengers with a streamlined fare structure. Its capacity last year increased 4.7 per cent to 53.8 billion available seat miles, compared with rival WestJet Airlines Ltd.'s 30.4-per-cent jump in capacity to 8.9 billion available seat miles.

Last week, Calgary-based WestJet reported a December load factor of 74.7 per cent, up from 73.6 per cent a year earlier. For 2004, WestJet had a 70-per-cent load factor, down from 70.6 per cent in 2003.

Air Canada has thrived on booming business to Asian destinations, said Gilles Roucolle, a vice-president in Mercer Management Consulting's Montreal office.

"They're emphasizing the long-haul, international routes, which command in general higher profit margins," said Mr. Roucolle, adding that the carrier appears willing to relinquish some market share domestically.

Last year, Air Canada's capacity on Pacific routes rose 53.4 per cent to 9.9 billion available seat miles. The carrier's Pacific load factor averaged 81.4 per cent, up from 77.8 per cent in 2003.

Markets in Latin America and the Caribbean are also growth areas. Last year, Air Canada began flights to Lima in Peru, Bogota in Colombia and Caracas in Venezuela.

Domestically last year, Air Canada was able to increase its air traffic 4.5 per cent while reducing its Canadian capacity by 3.3 per cent.

"In December, we achieved another month of record system and North America load factors as we continued to generate traffic growth," Air Canada chief financial officer Rob Peterson said in a statement after stock markets closed.

The carrier's Jazz subsidiary had a load factor of 64.3 per cent last year, compared with 59.6 per cent in 2003. Jazz's capacity fell 2.8 per cent in 2004 to 2.6 billion available seat miles, while its traffic climbed 4.9 per cent to 1.7 billion available seat miles.

Mr. Peterson said Canadians have given a vote of confidence to Air Canada's simplified structure of one-way fares, which it began phasing in during the spring of 2003.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. introduced streamlined ticket pricing last week, and several U.S. rivals matched its lower fares.

Mr. Peterson said the so-called legacy carriers in the United States still haven't implemented simplified fare structures as broadly as Air Canada. Delta, for instance, has round-trip rules, certain advance purchase requirements and one-day minimum stays, but Air Canada has eliminated those restrictions on its North American routes.

Air Canada plans to expand its streamlined fares to selected international flights this spring. The system will be patterned after the company's North American branding of five fare types.

Those fare classes start with the cheapest, branded Tango, and get more expensive with greater flexibility under the names Fun, Latitude, Freedom and Executive Class -- the highest ticket price category, but the one with the greatest flexibility.

International fare classes on selected routes will have their own brand names and a different set of ticketing features.

Air Canada has been among the industry leaders embracing simplified fares, a strategy to gain customer loyalty after consumers grew used to discounted prices after the terrorist attacks in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

Those opting for the lowest Air Canada fare save money but they get fewer Aeroplan loyalty points than someone else would receive at a higher fare. Paying the highest ticket price would also give the buyer greater flexibility to make changes, and confer on them standby privileges and priority check-in.

The airline is banking on its strategy of increasing customer loyalty and expanding foreign routes to help propel it back to profitability, Mr. Roucolle said.

Air Canada last posted an annual profit in 1999, but it is forecasting a profit in 2005.

For the first nine months of last year, Air Canada lost $895-million, compared with a $1.1-billion loss in the same period in 2003.

Montreal-based ACE Aviation Holdings Inc. is the parent company created after Air Canada exited bankruptcy protection on Sept. 30. ACE's class B shares fell 12 cents to $34.35 yesterday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Hey, Blastor, question for you...

I was reading over some old posts (yes, I have no life), and I was very surprised while reading one in which you and I were debating AC vs. Westjet. Given your very obviously slant at present, some of your comments caught my eye:
Blastor wrote:Westjet will offer... "Live Satelite TV"... LIVE TV is a Canadian first and only available on Westjet.

On Westjet there's no "rubber chicken", "mystery meat" and "lukewarm noodle"...

Westjet CARE...

Westjet has become succefull without a single penny from the taxpayers...

Westjet is not perfect. I agree. I wish they go to Barbados...
Why the change in heart?

Blastor,
I wouldn't normally reply to such a blatent fishing expedition such as this but I felt the need to. Air Canada parked its Zip fleet, which accounted for roughly 7% of its domestic capacity. I don't know the exact number of aircraft that have been returned to lessors or retired or parked (BAE146, DH8, A32X) on top of that, but I'd assume its at least another 3-5%.

Given that SARS hit hard last year, year-over-year numbers will no doubt appear better than they were the year prior. Factor in the fact that Air Canada has significantly less capacity than the year prior, numbers are obviously going to look good.

Westjet's numbers have been so-so, and in some cases (November - 58%!!) just plain ugly. You can attribute that to whatever you want, whether it be accessing AC's website or overcapacity or poor revenue management. I already know what you want to blame it on, so don't even bother pointing fingers.

If you work for Air Canada, which I assume you do, you certainly have something to be proud of. You have appeared to of right-sized your capacity. Hopefully adding 90 RJ's will not over-do things. When you post your Q4 numbers, we'll talk then.

I don't think I ever hated an airline company but West Jet is a first!

First of all, I will NEVER tolerate the fact that they asked me to send them $50 to acknowledge my resume. How about NO! How about I ask West Jet to pay ME 50 bucks to have the opportunity to maybe hire ME!

Secondo... The image of aviation is very low today. I sometimes get yelled at because I have to delay or cancel a flight because of bad weather by passengers! WHAT THE HELL! People take the airplane like they take a buss and have no respect for it. People do not have the magical sense of aviation anymore. How does this have anything to do with West Jet? Well, I somehow don't understand how making passengers unroll a toilet paper creates a good image to your company and aviation itself. Flying is not a joke and I despise anyone or any company that makes it a joke. It is sickening and I hope it will not become a trend in tomorrow’s commercial aviation. West Jet is trying to be the Patch Adams of aviation. Maybe it will help to sell airplane tickets for economy but I think it will just make matters worst for the future.

Bottom line, we are all in this small world together... all of us. And we can not demand respect while making a mockery of aviation ourselves.

Pic Wally -
Name one Pilot at West Jet That makes a mockery of actually flying the airplane, Safety, guest comfort, On Time performance...........

You can't because it doesn't happen. What happens in the boarding lounge or cabin is not nessesarily an indication of what occurs in the flight deck.

We Just don't get bent out of shape over little things. Like a god like image to be revered by the "pax".

As far as Getting yelled at by passengers. I tell you something like this Who is the pilot? Who has years of experince. Who is an expert in the field of aviation? The person doing the yelling is??????
a sales rep...a lawyer...a shoe salesman....an accountant?

Sense the fitness of things..Or consider the source

As for the 50 bucks that's a new one on me.

The $50.00 thing I remember from the early days, and I thought it was stupid too. Not as stupid as 30 large to get the job, but still dumb. It went away quite quickly, and hasn't been around for a long time now.

As for making flying a joke, of course I disagree, though I am admittedley biased. The first priority for our frontline employees is great customer service, and doing whatever we can to make their flying experience as enjoyable and painless as it can be. We do not view the people that fly us as a necessary evil, or a pain in the ass. They pay our bills, and our salary, and we treat them with the due repect.

We also try to inject some fun and enjoyment into things, and sometimes it can be overdone, but don't underestimate how many people enjoy having some fun when they travel. Don't underestimate how many people get off of our planes genuinely and excessively expressing a level of appreciation that I have never seen before when working at the maple leaf.

So although I hear what you are saying about the image of aviation, I would say that we are actually turning it back into an exciting and enjoyable experience, as opposed to something that must be 'tolerated', which is where it has evolved to in North America.

Of course they're the experts, Lefty! Don't you watch "Airline"? They're always seasoned veterans of airborne transportation who know more about how an airline works than the employees themselves. They are big important people and they deserve the respect of the carrier and to be personally catered to, at the expense of service to every other pax, as the world revolves around them.

And... you'll be hearing from their lawyer 'cause their bags didn't get on the flight!

Guess I got carried away there...

Well I was in a bad mood! I still think though that the 50 bucks was an insult... but it's good to hear that they took it off.

Well I must say that you guys have class. I reread my last message and I think I wouldn't have as well reacted if I where a pilot for WJ. For those that I insulted I take back what I have said and I would fly with you anyday.

wally
(Had to edit my message 'cause I wrote it between flights and it was just horrible!)

The $50 bucks was along time ago and only lived a very short life. It was imposed to stop the 5000 hour and less applicants, as well at that time an outside source was doing the intial screening of resumes. There have been several other carriers from other countries doing this as well. So perhaps WJA was the first in Canada to do this but not the first in the industry. All I can say is thank god they dumped the idea.
