Langewiesche's Stick and Rudder

Hi folks!

I've been taking my time reading the book Stick and Rudder by Wolfgang Langewiesche. What a great book! I'm almost done.

It is now my opinion that this book is a MUST READ for any pilot. Some of the stuff you know already, but there are tips in there that are just priceless that I guarantee your flight instructor has not mentioned or only skimmed over and you have forgotten.

Any Avcanada reviews on this great book?

One of the best books I have ever read. It puts its context into easy to understand concepts with real word comparisons. Sure sorted out my way of thinking lift was created, hard to believe its from the 40s. A must read for all pilots and plane nuts.

The ONLY bad thing about that book is I have felt the need to lend my copy out to people. The best $35 I spent since I started flying. I would pay $300 for copy without a problem.

agreed, its a great book; i liked the way he hammers home the counter-intuitive nature of flying.....ie that pulling on the stick wont save you, that it (in regular flight, not inverted) will always bring u closer to a stall. Wanna save your butt? PUSH on the stick, and LOWER the angle of attack.

I also just finished Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis", which is another awesome book (to state the obvious, pulitzer prize winner and all); what struck me most about Lindbergh is the incredible level of organization and planning that went into his flight. And navigation? After flying thousands of miles across the Atlantic, in the dead of night, often in IFR conditions, using only a compass and primative charts, he hit the southwest coast of ireland and was just two miles off his intended track....

You guys may find this cheesy, but Im a bit sentimental. When I went backpacking I took my Stick & Rudder book with me on my flights and whenever I hopped on a widebody, or any airline for that matter I would ask the F/A to see if the cockpit crew could sign it. They were quite humbled by this, especially the British Airways Captain out of Seattle to LHR in 04. He invited me up and showed me the weather charts they used and a brief description of to cockpit. I only had 100 hours or so at the time.

Now training is done......and all I want is my Cheque signed!

For aerodynamic theory and practical flying I read See How It Flies, a free online book by John S. Denker. It's gospel as far as I'm concerned and dispels a lot of myths about flying (including some minor mistakes in the FTM). A bit on the detailed side for pure flying but still simple enough for most of us. Check it out at http://www.av8n.com/

Bought one on istp's recommendation...great so far, but as he said, much of the early part is review from my PPL.

I used the Angle of Attack concept to do a recent driving lesson with my son (he is a FS addict), and when he began to think of the car as an a/c in a climb up this one hill, he was able to smoothly use throttle to maintain speed based on his AoA in the climb. Crudely adapted I know, as the airflow is what determines AoA with respect to the plane in the air, but it was interesting how quickly he grasped it.

Best way to teach theory of flight is to take a 4x8
sheet of plywood outside on a windy day.

All wings create lift by accelerating air downwards.

There are no giant vaccum cleaners up in the
sky. Bernoulli is a side show at the most.
