Do you have a current AIM?

Post by North Shore »

So I'm chatting with one of my co-workers a few days ago, and the talk turned to the AIM. Turns out that, just like me, he doesn't have a current one - just the "free" copy that got sent out when they phased out the AIP. Now, I used to be pretty diligent about my AIP amendments. I had them sent to my parents' house so that they could forward them to wherever I was living, so that I could keep the whole thing up-to-date. No longer. Apart from job interviews (getting fewer and far-between as my career gets more settled) I haven't cracked the AIM in a few years, whereas it used to be every few months when the AIP amendments were mailed to me.
The website is a pain in the ass to use to get amendments, and I really dislike sitting in front of a screen to keep current. Can I download? I'm not sure...the first time I went online was the last because of the perceived hassle factor. IIRC, you have to download the whole thing just to get the amendments?

So the question is, am I alone? Do the rest of you have a current AIM? Or simply the original courtesy copy that you were given when they changed it over?

No. Still have the same copy of the AIM that I bought a couple years ago when I started training.

As soon as Transport started to double-charge for
the AIM - remember, that's what our $55 medical
fee is supposed to go for - that was really the end
of the AIM. Pilots will get one when they do their
private - maybe - and that's it.

I don't even have the first one from the change over! I never got it, so I emailed TC to get a copy (with a current address just in case) and still never got it. So I emailed them AGAIN, and they said they'd send it AGAIN, and I still never got it. I hate that stupid $55 fee that doesn't get you anything any more...my company pays it automatically when we submit the claim for the dr's fee, but I never paid it when it was up to me. Bastards. At least it's free on the internet, and with a google search you can find what you're looking for pretty quickly.

It seems to be taking forever to download (or my computer/internet is slow).

I got two AIMs actually. First when they changed and then an updated one, but none since.

I have long since recycled my original copy of the AIM ... rely on the electronic version now, either the html online or the .pdf copy:

Transport Canada Aeronautical Information Manual (html)
Transport Canada Aeronautical Information Manual (.pdf)

The .pdf version is 31MB so it does take some time to download, as noted...

This publication will be available exclusively for free as a download format after the 2008-2 edition (October 2008) and only on Transport Canada's Civil Aviation Website. As a result, singular issue orders or subscription will not be accepted beyond the 2008-2-paper edition.
Must have been costing them to much to publish, especially with no one ordering it.

I usually keep the latest PDF version on my computer, plus some thrown away paper one that might one or two versions old (as a back-up). Like some others here, I actually took the time to amend my AIP and looked attentively at the changes, whereas I don't put the same amount of care keeping track of the AIM.

Not to hijack the thread, but I also find it disappointing that NavCanada doesn't have online/downloadable/free publications in addition to the paper ones. They are made from data stored in digital format, and printed off files made with computers... It would be nice to have the CFS, CAP, LOs, VTAs, VNCs, etc available in digital format.

Goodbye,

Louis

I use the html version listed above. No storage necessary and the pages load quickly.

I used to be religious with my AIP ammendments. I was an AIP nerd. I'd read through it with a highliter in hand and highlite any sentences or paragraphs that had info that I didn't know or would likely need to know for an upcoming checkride etc. When enough ammendments were put in that the flourescent pages were disappearing I'd go through again with my highliter and update all my notes again.
I was always meticulously up to date on the contents of that book. I got the first and second issue of the AIM from TC. Neither have EVER been cracked open. I only now have an up to date copy of the AIM thanks "CD" with the link above.
I know it's my fault that I'm not as up to date as I used to be as the info is all available with just a little effort on the web. It's just not something I think about doing when I have free time these days. I used to find the time because I had to keep my AIP up to date.

Just "progress" I guess.

Just what I thought - seems that progress isn't. But, they did save money doing it.

I kind of like the PDF version. For example I was looking for the regs about seat belts, I can search for Seatbelt go through the search hits and find the info that I want quickly and easily with out going through a bunch of other stuff. On the other hand I do not go through the other stuff which results in me not seeing that extra info for free. Herm is that a good thing or not?
