Calgarians kill me. They think they are the only ones to say "if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes" ...The next person to say this to me thinking it was an original thought gets a curb stomping.

Every May there is a "freak" snowstorm and people talk about how unusual the weather is. Then in September there is another "freak" snowstorm and everyone comments how crazy this is. For the 6 weeks of summer you hear every asshole walking down the street saying "how bout this heat?" In the winter after a chinook everyone freaks out about how cold it was yesterday and warm it is today... and now, a funnel cloud reported. STOP THE PRESSES!!

I think y'all have been hitting the crazy a little hard.

Sorry dude, I fly around in that shit, .5 at a time and OMG it is truly remarkable how quickly things change around here. I'm from yyc but spent the last few years in yvr where you can wake up in the morning and decide right away that there isn't going to be any flying for the day. Here, damn sun and blue sky one min and less that .5 later I am flying and hear reports of a fc near airdrie.

I concede that the weather isn't as news worthy as the shock and aww press makes it out to be (side note, the calgary sun actually called us for an interview hoping for something juicy out of our area) but I have to admit, its been fun, challenging and a bit depressing at times to deal with. Still, I'll take my 'lets wait 5 mins' position here in yyc over 'see you in a couple weeks' on the coast'.

If you're ever wondering what something means, these are the abbreviations we're allowed to use. Auto stations seem to be allowed to use some others, though, leading to wonderful crap like +UP (heavy precipitation, unknown type). Which leads to interesting conversations with pilots...

Not sure what other major urban center in Canada can say they have any of the above, other than the hot streak and funnel cloud. Have you ever had 4 feet of snow over 2 days and then plus 20 the third day anywhere else in Canada? Not to mention that the annual average snow fall is 4.5'. Have you ever experienced a real Chinook anywhere else in Canada where its -20, then +15 in the same week? Sure funnel clouds are common in other areas but Calgary just has such a wierd mix that the 5 min. saying might as well have been started here. They sit at 4,000' ASL right where the Rockies meet the Prairies. Anyone that knows anything about weather will know that will create some very unique (crazy) weather. Toronto doesn't have the most outstanding everything... get over it.
