Re: Baker Lake
The one time I spent any appreciable time in Baker, I tried to look up the local soapstone carver, as I heard he was damn good and so on. Turns out it was a frenchman who was living in Baker Lake, and his carvings were therefore Baker Lake originals, and was being sold to southern museums as authentic Inuit carvings. Needless to say the bad taste in my mouth wasn't from the restaurant.

Just make sure that if you are plagued by mosquitoes, that you aren't standing next to someone who has it....
That's how mosquitoes pass it on. They don't normally carry it unless they bite someone who has it, then go bite someone else. So, you can be in Baker Lake and catch malaria...
Granted, highly unlikely.
In the early 1900's many areas of North America had Malaria, including eastern Canada, due to whalers and other sailors that brought it from tropical climates, then got bit by the local mosquito population and it spread. Yep, more useless trivia... Here all week folks, try the veal!

Malaria parasites are transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Are there anopheles mosquitoes in Baker Lake?

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Baker Lake
Was listening to documentary on CBC radio last month on the mosquitoe. It seems the biggest reason mosguitoes spread is the global trade in used tires. Old tires are perfect breading places for them. Once water gets into a used tire it's nearly impossible to get it out. The entomologist speaking said he has been called out to areas in Europe, U.S. and Canada to combat South east Asian mosquitoes. He also said that malaria originated in Europe. He suggested that climate change is going to make the mosquitoe problem worse. The mosquitoe is the worlds deadlest animal to man.
They kill a child every 30 seconds in Africa and that is from malaria alone. When you consider all the other deseases that bug carries they drop 3 million humans per year worldwide.
BTW when I returned home from a deployment in Baker Lake 30 years ago within a day I came down with spinal meningitis and it darn near killed me. I don't know how I got the desease... water or mosquitoe. I suspect the later.

If you are getting gas, DON'T leave your machine there after fueling.
Some of the guys can get very grumpy.
Move it then unload.
Have fun - black fly season should be upon u now
