Sioux Lookout

Looks like I will be heading there for my new job. Any advice on places to live, what/where to avoid and so forth? Or just how the town is in general?

If you're from a bigger city, you most likely won't like it. If you're not, get a place on the water. Smaller town folk move there, get a place by the lake and love it. People either love it or hate it. Big aviation community there. I hate it.

Expensive and dirty.

I spent two years there and absolutely loved it. Mind you, I love fishing/hunting/snowmobiling/hockey/golf etc. If you're a city boy and need 16 different clubs to choose from every night, you probably won't like it all that much. Although, there were some hardcore YYZ boys that actually enjoyed their time there, probable because they realized that grumbling about it wasn't going to do anything. Yes, it is a bit expensive, but I managed to share a house (1000 sq. ft. for two guys, sweet setup) with a guy and paid $400/month all inclusive. And yes, the downtown area is a little dirty, but it was mostly harmless, passed-out drunks that were the problem when I was there.

My advice would be to buy a small boat, some hockey equipment, golf clubs, a snowmobile and a shot gun :D. That way you'll never run out of things to do on days off. Oh, and hopefully your company has a good group of guys/gals up there, that'll make a world of a difference as well. And if all else fails, you can take that special someone on a drive to the big city, aka Dryden. Ristorante or the Riverview Lodge are a couple good places to get a steak and a beer.

Thanks for the responses! I am not new to the small town world. I figger it is what you make, you gotta go out make a good group of friends or else you go insane. From what I here there is a strong aviation community, and I might even take up curling again (beer drinking on ice :D) as I can not skate to play hockey. The only thing left for me to do is find a good poker game so I can feed my OTHER addiction

Sioux Lookout is an awesome town to get a start in aviation. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I might know of a house for sale soon too if anyone is interested!
