Composite Flight Plan
I've got a question for anyone that could help... I want to fly a VFR departure, bum around low level for a while then climb and proceed to destination IFR. I know I can file a composite flight plan (Z as the Flight Rules). I'm flying low level (300' AGL/420 kts g/s) from Moose Jaw to the YDR233/70, then FL390, M0.70 to Thunder Bay (DCT YDR DCT YWG DCT VBI J500 YQT). What do I put in the altitude, speed and routing portion?

Hmmmm.. Sorry my ignorance, but where do I specify the change in flight rules and what do I put for VFR routing?

Re: Composite Flight Plan
The FL390 part will alert the obtuse that you will be IFR at that point. For routing, can you specify a CYR you'll be in, or a radius of, say, the YMJ 053/25?

Re: Composite Flight Plan
Are you planning on having a wicked tailwind at low level? If not maybe a slower speed would be more appropriate for that altitude.... (perhaps 250kts or less until 10,000'?)AuxBatOn wrote:I've got a question for anyone that could help... NS, we have the authorization to fly fast at low level in our Low Level Training Area. It's all legal...

Re: Composite Flight Plan
We won't be in a CYR. We have a low level route that we fly. I'll just put YDR233/70 in the VFR part of the flight plan. That should suffice. That way, ATC knows where I'll open the IFR part of the flight plan.just curious wrote:The FL390 part will alert the obtuse that you will be IFR at that point. Thanks!

Re: Composite Flight Plan
Here in Fort McMurray a lot of charter aircraft like to do an oilsands tour after departure (20-30 NM NW) then pick up the IFR directly from center. In those situations they usually file an IFR plan, and the FSS gets them approval for a VFR departure with instructions to contact center when their tour is complete. A little less complicated, but I couldn't say if every center would be as accommodating. And, for a long-ish VFR leg, like the 70 miles you're proposing, filing composite is still probably the best way to go.
