Actually, according to the article I read in the paper, it was not free of charge, they flew her back now, and the family would pay them when they raised the money. Luckily they were able to raise the money quite quickly through fundraising and donations.

Chevy 911, the Aircraft was free, the crew, both air and ground worked for free, he nurse worked for free,CYWG and CYYC forgave ramp fees, the money was for fuel, they raised more than enough, newspapers, TV, Radio dont always get it totally right, its a credit to the comunity and all involved, You are right, they were not going to be billed before the flight as per normall practice,all the other companies wanted money up front, but thats not the point, here we have a good example of "small town Canada" and a local operator filling in for the shortcomings in a system, I think its great!

They were still charged $10000 for the flight from Calgary to Thunder Bay. Good on the flight crew and nurses for working for free and it's nice to see the community come together to raise the 10 grand for these people.

I'm sorry to hear about the patient's condition, thoughts are with her.

Dont know how many of you have heard about the great job that Thunder did last week for a young lady who was abandoned by the "system" but for those who havnt here is a quick recap.The lady in question had flown to Calgary to undergo an amputation of a leg in an attempt to stop the spread of cancer, but the surgeons made the decision that it was too late and gave her about three weeks to live. whren she then tried to return to her home town of Thunder Bay she was told by the Government of Ontario that medivacs

were not for those in her condition, only for those in a treatable condition

{Im sure this will bring forth some comments} In step the good folks of Thunder Bay and at Thunder. After other companies had quoted on the trip it became obvious that the relatives just could not raise the money the Staff and management at Thunder donated the aircraft and the crew {Capt, F/O, Medic, Nurse and ground crew}worked free of charge, local citizens raised the money for the fuel, the lady in question is now surounded with her loved ones back home in Thunder Bay. We see a lot of negative threads on this site, I think such actions by Thunder raise the tone and remind us of the good in this industry. As an end note it was the captains last flight with Thunder before moving on to a Q400 seat, as the captain said on the CBTV interview it was a great note to go out on.

Ya that's right not like the "threats of suicide" and godamn stomach aches that are the norm with "priority calls", what a joke. Of course the Gov of Ont didn't have the funds for this trip, they had already pissed it all away on shopping trips for our buddys up north.

I bet Bravo is disapointed that they didn't get to do the free trip.

That's why I left the Ontario Medevac system and never looked back. Nice work Thunder. A pleasant surprise to see some integrity is still left in the system.

When I started this thread it was just for generall info, but it has been so much nicer to read {even the negative replies arnt really negative} than most of the posts that I think when I hear of any more good deeds I willo post them, makes the morning java taste better to read this stuff rather than the endless bitching of many posts, I gues if I had named the outfits , who, knowing the urgency of the case , jacked the price up, it would have gone the normall route , so we wont mention them! Think positive!

Ahmen to that. I pretty much forgot that airplanes can be used for good things and that they weren't simply designed to make avcanada members into miserable pricks. I was pretty stoked to hear the story as well, so thanks for passing it along.
