:smt040 a classic chasing iron.

http://www.b737.org.uk/thefullcircle.htm

One fine hot Summer’s afternoon saw a Cessna 150 flying circuits at a quiet country airfield. The Instructor was getting quite bothered with the student’s inability to hold circuit height in the thermals and was getting impatient at sometimes having to take over the controls. Just then he saw a twin engine Cessna 5,000ft above him and thought "Another 1,000 hrs of this and I qualify for that twin charter job! Aaahh.. to be a real pilot.. going somewhere!"

The Cessna 402 was already late and the boss told him this charter was for one of the Company’s premier clients. He’d already set MCT and the cylinders didn’t like it in the heat of this Summer’s day. He was at 6,000ft and the winds were now a 20kt headwind. Today was the 6th day straight and he was pretty damn tired. Maybe if he got 10,000ft out of them the wind might die off... geez those cylinder temps! He looked out momentarily and saw a B737 leaving a contrail at 33,000ft in the serene blue sky. "Oh man" he thought, "My interview is next month. I hope I just don’t blow it! Outa G/A, nice jet job, above the weather... no snotty passengers to wait for.. aahhh."

The Boeing 737 bucked and weaved in the heavy CAT at FL330 and ATC advised that lower levels were not available due traffic. The Captain, who was only recently advised that his destination was below RVR minimums had slowed to LRC to try and hold off a possible inflight diversion, and arrange an ETA that would helpfully ensure the fog had lifted to CATII minima. The Company negotiations broke down yesterday and looked as if everyone was going to take a damn pay cut. The F/O’s will be particularly hard hit as their pay wasn’t anything to speak of anyway. Finally deciding on a speed compromise between LRC and turbulence penetration, the Captain looked up and saw Concorde at Mach 2+. Tapping his F/O’s shoulder as the 737 took another bashing, he said "Now THAT’S what we should be on... huge pay packet... super fast... not too many routes... not too many sectors... above the CAT... yep! What a life...!"

FL590 was not what he wanted anyway and considered FL570. Already the TAT was creeping up again and either they would have to descend or slow down. That damn rear fuel transfer pump was becoming unreliable and the F/E had said moments ago that the radiation meter was not reading numbers that he’d like to see. Concorde descended to FL570 but the radiation was still quite high even though the Notam indicated hunky dory below FL610. Fuel flow was up and the transfer pump was intermittent. Evening turned into night as they passed over the Atlantic. Looking up, the F/O could see a tiny white dot moving against the backdrop of a myriad of stars. "Hey Captain" he called as he pointed. "Must be the Shuttle. "The Captain looked for a moment and agreed. Quietly he thought how a Shuttle mission, whilst complicated, must be the be all and end all in aviation. Above the crap, no radiation problems, no damn fuel transfer problems... aaah. Must be a great way to earn a quid."

Discovery was into its 27th orbit and perigee was 200ft out from nominated rendezvous altitude with the commsat. The robot arm was virtually U/S and a walk may become necessary. The 200ft predicted error would necessitate a corrective burn and Discovery needed that fuel if a walk was to be required. Houston continually asked what the Commander wanted to do but the advice they proffered wasn’t much help. The Commander had already been 12 hours on station sorting out the problem and just wanted 10 bloody minutes to himself to take a leak. Just then a mission specialist, who had tilted the telescope down to the surface for a minute or two, called the Commander to the scope. "Have a look at this Sir, isn’t this the kinda flying you said you wanted to do after you finish up with NASA?" The Commander peered through the telescope and cried "Ooooohhhhh yeah! Now THAT’S flying! Man, that’s what its all about! Geez I’d give my left nut just to be doing THAT down there!" What the Discovery Commander was looking at was a Cessna 150 flying circuits at a quiet country airfield on a nice bright sunny afternoon.

So....this dudes dies and is waiting in line to see St Peter at the Pearly Gates. As he is waiting he see this Baron come out of the clouds and attempt a landing. Thing lands, SLAM! cracks up, skids to a halt and disolves into mist. A few minutes later same airplane is back, SLAM!, onto the runway, gear up, disolves into mist..and the cycle keeps repeating. Final the dude gets to the front of the line and sees St Peter. He asks St Peter what the deal is with the Baron. St Peter roles his eyes and says, "That's just God, he thinks HE'S a pilot"

There are great people in all professions and walks of life. clunck that is a fantastic example of it too! Never look down on anyone but liars and crooks.. and even then they are fighting there own battle.

Quick aside:

This is one of the greatest pieces of wisdom ever spoken to me. As I laid in the bed in the hospital after all those lovely surgeries and pains and what have you.. the attending RN was an absolute jackass to me and everyone in his sight. I figured.. wow this guy is a complete tool! I mentioned this to one of the seemingly lowly janitorial staff members that was quietly cleaning the floors in my room. He leaned over and said in a quiet east indian accent.. "My son.. we are all fighting our own battle.. You have yours ahead and he obviously has his own now too. " Then he turned with a smile and moved on to the next room. It didn't mean much to me at the time.. but wow.. truer words have not been spoken! Everyone is fighting a battle.. you may not be able to see it or understand it, but you should always be understaning of it.

Rowdy,

Question : When does a democracy fail to be a democracy anymore ?

Answer: When ignorant folks actually believe and indoctrinate the people that driving a car or flying a plane is a PRIVELEDGE and not a RIGHT !

WHY ,,,, Because i paid for the roads and the licence and the car and the cops and then someone TRIES to tell me its a PRIVELEDGE ?
Its like paying for a 2 acre plot, then building a house on it , then furnishing the house ,,,,only to tell the neighbours how wonderful a priveledge it is to be ALLOWED to live in it !!!!
The only time driving BECOMES a priveledge is IF i contravene the regulations that WE as a people ENACT , then my licence may be taken away and I receive PARDON by the courts to drive IF i cannot pay etc. AFTER paying a fine or serving time off, my reinstatement is still NOT a priveledge ,, it is law and im ENTITLED to drive again!
In AMERICA, Is it a priveledge to bear arms ? NO, Its STILL a right !!

Not to hijack this thread, but it is slightly on this twisted subject...

What is the best answer to evade the question (in a social situation)

"Oh and what do you do for a living?"

The best I've heard so far are:

1.
"I'm in high speed aluminum tubing." (almost always met by puzzled gazes)

2.
"I'm a heavy equipment operator." (although that often is followed up by, " oh what type of equipment?"

The funniest storey I heard about a response to said question:

A flight crew was in a bar having a couple, VERY late check in the next day so maybe they already had a few. In conversation with some girls the question comes up.

"So what do you guys do?"

Without thinking, one responds...

"We are both pilots."

The girls get a surprised confused look,

"What did you say, you are both pilots?"

Realizing his mistake he demonstrates some very quick thinking and rectifies his mistake.

"No no, I said we are PIRATES....AAAAaaaarrrggghhhh Matey!"

HAHAHA, maybe you had to be there but I thought it was farkin' Hilarious....

Rowdy, you have started a very worrying trend, you were first to use it on this thread and it appears others have been wooed by your sage ways. However on one particular point you are mistaken. Privilege does not have a 'D' in it! Never has, never will. Please do better in future, many thanks.

I agree with the guy who said its not a privilege to fly when you've spent the bucks and passed the exams, but damn I feel lucky everytime I do it, even when its the 15th 14hr day in a row!

I must confess when someone I know asks me to do something on monday, if I'm working I will say 'I'm flying'. Its not because I think I'm cool, you should see me, I'm not, its because thats what I'll be doing on monday, flying. If someone I don't know asks me I will generally say that I will be taking an aerial adventure of which the likes has never been seen.

I don't boast about my job. I feel a bit uncomfortable when someone asks me what I do for a living, although I am not ashamed.

Whether I'm flying in beautiful blue skies or flying in shit weather, I am thankful. I know there are countless others that are stuck at a desk that would love to take my place.

I am a very lucky man. I love what I do. There are millions of people out there that can't say that.

I think many of us go through an evolution of how we deal with the 'what do you do?' question.

-when we are new to the flying biz (or in training) we can't wait to tell people that we are 'pilots'.
-then we start to get some humility (real or contrived) and maybe feel a little awkward with the instant attention our profession draws, and come up with some of the lame responses listed above (high speed aluminum tubing/transportation/garbage truck driver/whatever). Eventually you realize you end up looking like an even bigger dork because you can't answer a simple question honestly, and for some reason are ashamed of your job. And yes, I admit I've tried most of them.
-I finally realized that I am proud of what I do; I take it seriously, I attempt to do the best job I can, and I take great pride in the trust that my passengers put in me and my abilities. I tell people what I do, and I often get the gee whiz, isn't that cool, tell me all about it, and here is the inane story about what happened to me once on an airplane. But instead of being bothered by it, I realize now that it is great--many people would love to do our job for a living, and many others are, rightfully or not, impressed. And I am happy to tell them about my passion, answer their questions, in a way the says that I am proud of what I do, but not arrogant about it. Many people have the same fascination with flight that attracted us, why not take some time to share that.

Of course I always try to then ask them about their job, and be as genuinely interested. Sometimes it is hard when someone is an account receivables analyst, but I always try.

How is it not a privilege (dropped the D just for you  ) to the general public to hop in a pressurized tube and haul off across countless timezones and kill days of normal travel time ? Vancouver to calgary would take you around 12hrs on a good weather day by car and most likely over 100 bones in fuel and pit stops. By air? 1hr 18 mins. Thats a privilege! YYZ-YVR? 5hrs in the air.. a MINIMUM 3 days by road (if you never stopped and broke speed limits) and don't forget the costs of meals and hotel rooms now needed too!! Very much a privilege.

Not everyone can afford to fly and not everyone should be able to either. Especially at the cost of those that provide the service.

And those of us that fly for a living have earned that privilege by spending our time and money on attaining the licences and minimums and flight times required. If we as humans had the RIGHT to fly.. the powers that be would have given us wings from birth..

Nobody is entitled to ANYTHING. You want something? you feel the right to something? Work for it. Attain it. Pay for it. Thats life my friend and there aint no way to change it.

Birrdoggy.. The last year has changed my perspective so immensely I don't even know where to start! I'll give you a shout here shortly
