NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. - Authorities say a single-engine plane from Canada has made an emergency landing on highway in New York state.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/0809 ... ighway_cda
Local emergency officials say the pilot and two passengers, all men in their 20s, were from Seneca College in Toronto. Their plane landed safely just after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

It touched down on the northbound lanes of Interstate 87 near the town of North Hudson, 150 kilometres north of Albany.

Officials said the plane was headed to Burlington, Vt., when its engine failed.

A state police dispatcher says the incident is being investigated by federal aviation officials.

Link with photo, all ok. Possible oil system problem.

Talk about bad luck, 15 minutes from the airport and your engine fails.

I don't care where they're from. Good job for putting it down in one piece. Something tells me the Bonanza doesn't make a great glider.

Knowing the Americans, I guess they are lucky for not being jailed after doing a great job flying but landing off an "entry airport" and clearing customs!

Guess the cops over there are a bit smarter than the ones in the Niagara region.

American Cops Diet off of doughnuts, not sure how smart they can be. Fish Doughnuts, now we're speaking about a potential case that they're smart. Okay, my american rant for the day.

Good Work ! Whats up with all of these crashes and emergencies lately, are people freaking out so much about fuel prices they fuel up appropriately to glide to the runway? ... Guess there are a few glitches in this method.

I'm starting to think the same thing. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

But Soo College students could have landed inverted.

Fortunatley never have experienced an engine failure, but when the shit really hits the fan...and you have to make a decision...would you pick a hwy to land on or a field. We are taught to pick fields in training...but when things arent going your way what would you do?

Good job guys.

There's a huge lesson in here. First off....kudos to the guys for getting it down safely, and with no bent metal.
The lesson? Oh yes........a highway makes a great landing strip! I did this exact thing many years ago on the Conestoga Parkway in Waterloo. We "teach" students to land in "fields", but when traffic permits....ROADS ROCK!!

Way to go guys!

As long as there are no overpass bridges or power lines across the highway they are excellent landing strips.

Of course you have to be careful about landing on traffic but that should not be to difficult to sort out.

Landing on a field is a real gamble unless you have been able to have a close look at it. For sure the highway will be as smooth as a runway.

Cat: looks like you haven't been North recently.
These highways are much smoother than most runways up there....

PS: and you don't usually need to scare drunk skidooers off of them!

Nice job lads.

Looking at the picture it must have been a bit of a handful...Down the hill, through the trees, around the bend, up the hill.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm happy to have a college grad as my First Officer any day.

clunk... I'm both - so what does that make me?

Anyways - to avoid the thread hijack, and getting into the whole college debate again, which has been beaten to death with nothing settled. Good job to the pilots who got it down all right - it's a shitty situation and you can walk away. I've seen and heard about far worse up in the bush.

Raven, I would sugest you contain your horseshit untill all the facts are in,having spent many hours line indocing all sorts of pilots from all kinds of backgrounds I find you remarks to be totally self serving and biased, the best kid I ever had on a line indoc at Big Red had a grade six education and flew fish in a B18, he finished up at the very top of flight opps management, in the mean time you might like to reflect that every day kids pull of far more difficult landings than this as just a routine part of their day, they call them "Float Pilots", and "Northern Pilots" And "Off Strip Pilots",but there are no newspapers where they fly. Your turn Cat!

Nice post clunk. Might want to wait until you sober up before hitting the Submit button next time.

Getting back on topic. Nice landing lads.

I just read the article in the Globe and Mail about the excellent job these young pilots did in landing their stricken aircraft. clunk, you call yourself a professional pilot at "Big Red". I think you owe them an apology.

15 mins out from burlington VT, I'm assuming it's pretty hilly and good fields are few and far between.
