JUMPSEAT Flight Crew Development Series // YWG // 23 Sept 08

Post by JUMPSEAT »

Just looking to get the word out on a new program for Winnipeg-area pilots. Some great speakers lined up and a lot of positive operator support. Looking forward to a lot of people being able to take advantage of this.

"Personal responsibility in aviation is more than just signing a form and taking command; it is accepting a lifetime commitment to use maximum effort and intellect in the pursuit of aviation excellence, regardless of the seat you occupy and regardless of your position or rank within the organization. The responsibilities to act, to speak up, and to communicate when necessary are also perpetual and indispensible – as well as a lesson we’ve too often paid for in blood. The responsibility for safety cannot be delegated, regardless of how low on the totem pole an airman perceives himself or herself to be.”

John J. Nance
Foreword, Redefining Airmanship (Kern, 1996)
JUMPSEAT is a series of professional development presentations directed towards professional pilots in their first 1000 hours of flying. The series addresses operational realities of commercial aviation with an underlying emphasis on attitude, professionalism, and leadership.

Program content has been developed with the guidance of the Chief Pilots & Operations Managers of Manitoba-based air operators. This project is all about bringing out the best in entry-level flight crewmembers. It’s about passing on knowledge and providing perspective, and hearing it all from the right people. It’s about the local industry ‘supporting its own’ by creating an opportunity for those who want to excel, a platform for them to do it.

Whether you’re building hours, working on a ramp or in a dispatch office, or just got your shot on the flightline – this series was created for you.

The program is hosted and funded by the aviation community. Because of this, there is NO COST to participants.

I love the quote. I have been a John Nance fan ever since my early days in aviation-- somewhat of a roll model to me :prayer: . He also writes some great page-turner aviation novels.

Yeah, his ideas have stuck with me too.

The things that Nance talks about, I don’t think you hear enough of as someone getting into flying…and I found some people who agreed. With the amount of opportunity for low time pilots in the area, we were able to build support from local operators and create a platform where concepts that aren’t covered in the CPL Study & Reference Guide could be presented.

I was taken aback by the willingness and support from all of the top-notch people that were willing to give their time and money to make this happen. It’s a reminder of just how significant mentorship is in aviation.
