Fail 2nd Time

Post by LOCBC »

Hi,

One of my friend fail twice on Flight Instructor Rating (Class 4) written exam. She told me first one was much easier than the second one. The second one didn`t have any question from VOR, WT. and Balance, take off distace calculation nothing.

What book she can study that may help her? any information will be great or any idea what would be like for 3rd exam?

Thank you

I don't know if this would help, but maybe study up on the FGU and FTM as heavily as she did for her private when she didn't know what the exams were like and was most likely over prepped ;)

It seems like the transport exams like to nail very different subject areas on different tests.

If she's seen TWO different tests already, I'd say that she
probably knows more than most, what they are like!

The good news is that Transport generally has 4 tests,
so by the 5th time around, it should look familiar

I don't know, but is the instructor written test hard? ... like is it one where people freak out like the CPL written? cause I haven't heard that it's that bad.

I sort of agree with Strega but with a less violent intent. Maybe she can look into flying floats or something as an alternative, but if she really "WANTS" to teach which I really hope is the case, then study hard. It doesn't look good to fail your Instructor written twice, I mean you're a pilot now.

But I really don't know cause I haven't written it yet, but I would figure that one should know their stuff before wanting to be an instructor. Then we have people who really suck at writing tests.

Good Luck

Not to sound like an ass, but the instructor exam was a joke. It's the first 44 pages of the FIG, and some general knowledge. maybe instructing isn't for her...

We all have to remember that all transport exams are all more like an english test over anything else. If she still want's to give it another shot buy a book directed at instructor ratings. I like . books but I'm not sure if they publish a Instructor one or not.

But as mentioned in previous post you have to be dedicated to teach and you have to know your materiel or your just going to produce very scary new pilots.

Talking to a transport canada inspector regarding the instructor exam, all you have to study is the flight instructor guide's first 50 pages or so and the FLIGHT TRAINING MANUAL! That is where they get their questions from.

It's a difficult exam, but still one that people do well on. I didn't find it to be an english exam at all ( no tricks or anything). They were just questions that make you think- which is what you need to do as an instructor explaining something to your student. Transport knows you know the basics, now they want to know if you really understand something and the theory about it. If you know your stuff, you'll pass. If you fail twice, you should not be relied upon to teach someone these things. Time to go a new route.

Edited to note that there was definitely more to it that the FTM and FIG, in my exam anyways. I had some air law, pdm, human factors and more technical info about instruments.

Do not be so hard on her! Some people have a hard time with tests, and IMHO a test is not really an indication that you know your stuff, just that you have a good memory.

So do not be too fast to judge..

It really isn't that hard. If you're going to be teaching, you really need to know stuff inside out or you're wasting someones time and hard earned money. Also, the Pultz flight instructor manual is worth every penny, I still use it for refresher.

Id probably say that if she cant pass the flight test.

As far as the written goes, I dont see the point of it if she has a CPL already, the CPL written is not that easy. If she cant pass the instructor written, how did she pass the CPL written? :|

The CPL written is a piece of cake too!.. its not much different than the PPL other than some 700 questions

Sometimes it has nothing to do with how hard the exam is. Some people just have a hard time with exams. Nothing to do with the ability or knowledge of the subject matter, just a problem with exams.

Out of curiosity is English her first language? If not perhaps it would be beneficial to take an English upgrade course. Unfortunately if language is a barrier, that isn't going to be overcome until the root problem is addressed.

If she really wants to teach I wish her well! As a current student I appreciate instructors who have a passion for teaching instead of just a hunger to build hours and get out. The latter isn't great for someone learning.... its obvious when instructors aren't there to teach - their body language and approach towards their student is always a give away.

I don't agree with the instructor flight test. Just like how on the PPL/CPL flight tes they test the majority of the exciercises you learn, they should test all 30 excercises on an instructor flight test to see what kind of instructor they're putting out there.
