Deaf pilots?
Have a partially deaf student who is interested in getting his PPL or if he can a CPL. He can hear on the radio fine with his hearing aid so I'm wondering what his chances are for a class 3 or even a class 1 medical. I know with vision it is simply correctable to 20/20 and you must wear glasses, can you correct hearing and just have "Must wear hearing aid" on the medical restrictions?
For that matter, I wonder how many pilots have lost their hearing already and continue to pass medicals and still fly. Where does the medical examiner draw the line?

start here:

and scroll down about 60% to "Hearing Requirment".
Don't see anything about hearing in here:

As always, contact your RAMO.

Re: Deaf pilots?
Thanks, I had looked at those in the CARs before, but it seems some people have gotten around it and fly with restrictions on their license, kinda like the people who are semi color blind only able to fly day time etc. Time to call the RAMO I guess.

Re: Deaf pilots?
I know of a gentelman who was partially deaf and was restricted to fly in uncontrolled airspace, but he could still fly. I believe he had hearing aids in both ears and was 70 or 80'ish years old.

I've heard of that sort of thing, thats what I'm hoping could be possible. Though the guy I'm thinking of probably could do fine in controlled air space as the only hearing problems for him when he has his hearing aid are when he is in a crowded room with everyone talking. Only one person on the radio at a time anyhow. I've taken him flying before and he can manage the radios himself just fine. It is easier for him in the air then on the ground as the headset has his own personal volume control.

Re: Deaf pilots?
I wish him the best of luck.
Tell him to push for it..
Funny when I got my med test last week, after 30 years
no hearing test for a CAT 3...
SF./

Re: Deaf pilots?
I have a CAT3 with restriction to have hearing aids. Since my digital aids are a problem with headphones and sudden bursts f noise, I get around it by have a volume control on my headset, and the volume buttons on the radio also provide enough "aid" in hearing that I could successfully argue that I am within the restriction on my paper.
I explored the medical requirements for a CAT1 and there are specific range requirements for hearing. I'll try and find it again.

Are we there yet?

Re: Deaf pilots?
When I was in the process of getting my first Cat 1, I came in slightly below the standards for hearing. I was able to get my flight instructor to sign off some papers saying that I could in fact hear everything in on the radio and over the intercom without difficulty. I have one good ear, and the other has somewhere between 60-70 percent loss. A good headset should make up for the loss.
Re: Deaf pilots?
You can hold a Cat 1 medical with only sight in 1 eye....so I would sure hope hearing aids wouldn't be a problem.
live simply. simply live.

Re: Deaf pilots?
I was in a Jazz jumpseat a couple years ago and the F/O at the time ( think his name was Rob ) had a hearing aid and did talk about it. You can qualify for a Cat1 even if you have a hearing aid.
I'll look for the numbers just so we don't leave off of this thread with speculation.
Cheers

Re: Deaf pilots?
Hmmm, that sounds promising, is some manage to do it, there has to be a way. The medical exam descriptions didn't seem too promising though.

Re: Deaf pilots?
I've even heard that TC will send one of their examiners down to see if you can SAFELY operate an aircraft and if you can, they will approve the medical. Might want to look into that, unsure if there are any extra charges for that though.Invertago wrote:Have a partially deaf student who is interested in getting his PPL or if he can a CPL.
