Jail them All!!!

Post by Icebound »

There is no doubt that our justice system needs a revamp, and chronic violent criminals require special attention from it.

And so do victims, unethical lawyers, the special treatment of the wealthy, and any number of ills that surround it.

But Harper has to be careful. At $25,000 annually per inmate or thereabouts, he has to be careful about just how much he intends to increase our prison population.

Even super-conservative Texas is looking at ways to reduce its prison population.

America is the most imprisoned population on the planet, (greater even than China on a per-capita basis).
And pretty much every credible criminologist will tell us that it has done nothing toward reducing crime.

If we follow their path... guess what... he will have to increase our taxes to pay for it.

It is well-known that music calms the soul. Maybe he should spend some of that money on arts programs for youth.

I know a way to do that. I was in a central american country
a while back, and in talking to the locals - nice guys - it turned
out that they used to have quite a bad gang problem in their
country.

See, kids would go north to the USA, and get their graduate
degrees in gang activities in the large cities, then get deported
back home, where they continued their activities, which made
the ordinary people very unhappy.

So, they passed a law that being in a gang was illegal - 6 years
in prison, if you had a gang tattoo, etc. Unfortunately, there
was an "electrical fire" in a prison housing 150 of these very
tough criminals - all died.

Since then, they haven't had a gang problem - no more crime.

Texans are pansies.

Give those who want early release picks and shovels and let them build a highway between Yellowknife and Churchill.
Hard labour should be given to all crooks if they want to earn early release .
Rather than cruely warehousing people until they are given the opportunity to get out and re-offend .They should be given the benefits that hard work and the dignity that their labours would give them.Instead of being warehoused to rot .Teach them how to work hard and when they get released doing a days work will not be foreign to them.
Such a project would give them marketable working skills that the country needs in construction and other road and rail projects.

The Canadian correctional system is one of the best in the world, offering a wide array of research validated programs proven effective in reducing re-offending. However, there are also plenty of problems in the overall justice system:

1. Giving 2 for 1 credit to people held in remand while awaiting trial often leaves them with a sentenced period too short to participate in programs.

2. Some refuse all treatment programs, are certain to re-offend, but have to be released anyway when their sentence is expired.

3. Overall sentencing has become too soft. There are many examples of sentences actually decreasing for individuals as their number of convictions increases. Sentences are often too short for offenders to be able to participate in programming.

Longer sentences for repeat and serious criminals will not significantly increase the overall cost to society, and may actually reduce it. The costs for correctional centres will increase, but not by anything close to the current average per diem cost per prisioner. Most correctional centre costs are fixed, regardless of the number of inmates housed in the facility. Adding more inmates gets the tax payer a volume discount on the per diem rate.

Keeping a chronic offender in gaol longer will eliminate the dozens of crimes they would commit every week they are in the community. Police, court, legal aid, ambulance, hospital, insurance claims, victim's off work, etc, etc, etc, are all saved when a crook is out of circulation and in gaol. It currently costs about $60k per year to keep a crook in prison. What's the cost for a couple day trial of some punk gang member only charged with drug trafficking or a serious assault? There have likely been a half dozen pre-trial court appearances before the actual trial and the lawyers will each have at least 100 hours into the case. Tax payers are picking up the tab for the crown lawyer, judge, court clerk, sheriff, and probably the legal aid defence lawyer. I suggest that $60k a year to keep a crook in gaol is a deal for the taxpayers, and we should be doing a lot more of it.

Canada has the best jail system.

I agree.

Kill 30 prostitutes, NO death penalty.

Kill your entire family, NO death penalty.

Kill someone on a bus, NO death penalty.

Kill millions in a holocaust like during WWII, NO death penalty.

Kill your baby [ babies ], NO death penalty.

I could go on, but you get the drift.

Canada is so damn nice. The best place in the world to be a criminal.

NO criminal is afraid of canada.

If I could hear a guarantee that an increase in taxes would go towards more prisons and tougher sentences, I'd be first in line to pay. I'd rather have that than some goddamn carbon tax.

You guys heard yet about Luther College in Regina today? A kid held and entire auditorium gathering hostage with a gun(possibly a fake gun) to the principle's head in front of all the classes. Want to bet there won't be any names given, or even a sentence worth spitting on?

So we don't have the death penalty... what's wrong with that? What purpose would it serve? It makes no difference in crime statistics after the first year it's introduced, so what's the point? Don't you think that it's an easy way out for criminals? Don't you think they should have to live a long long time in prison (which isn't nearly as much fun as you'd like to think).

Getting tough on crime doesn't prevent crimes. Some criminals about to commit crimes don't value their own life and don't care if they die.
I read a letter in a newspaper today, in the 'letters to the editor' section but the letter doesn't appear in the online version. I think it's very strange it wasn't posted online. Is that a liberal paper or a conservative paper, The Winnipeg Free Press?
Anyway, I think it may have been written by a victim. It was a response to a earlier letter on "Restorative Justice, It works". This person wrote that criminals never have to face or hear from their victim or victims familie's. They wrote if they had to spend some hours with the victims they would not be able to forget about it and not to deal with anguish.

I heard it's very hellish in prison. I don't like that all the politicians don't seem to care about the terrible problem of people with mental illness being put in prisons and receiving no care or help. But I guess this ties in with the process of diminishing the healthcare in Canada.

Also, some people on here, sound as if prison and longer terms are more important than changing people's lives or the wrongs of the system. Everyone knows there are alot of injustices being done to some prisoners so how come nobody cares about fixing those.

Just because the USA has so many prisoners doesn't mean we have to follow along.
We have different aspirations and we shouldn't be forced to do this or that to help their evil plans. Those Americans are just sitting back through these imprisonments and they delude themselves with frivalousness. I don't think they should try to down play everything that's happening.

Well I haven't heard any stats for some time but when I was taking a class in Law the rate was 60k per year. Yeah, it's a lot. But it's going to cost a lot to have an effective program.... one I have pretty serious concerns about. I've heard far too many stories of people killed for under 10 dollars, I've been mugged and threatened myself. So you have to send them away to keep yourself safe. But these criminals go away for a very limited period of time, and if you look at the kind of facilities the US runs, they do not rehabilitate criminals, they put them through the violence diploma program before releasing them back into our populations. How much is your safety worth? How much is your daughter's safety worth?

Before you go ahead and start cutting taxes and heads off willy-nilly, perhaps you should consider what kind of effect it has on the loppers, and whether we will really have any of the integrity and civilized humanity you're protecting LEFT after what you've done.

Crime is not a numbers game.

We have X amount of space to house criminals. We are now at X+ levels. This is not a criminal justice problem. This is a great sign that the system works. People break the law, we send them to prison.

A great way to solve the overcrowding problem: %30 of our (US) prison's hold illegal immigrants. Deport them, and you now have %30 capacity back to hold %30 of the dumb-asses who unfortunately are protected under the Bill of Rights / Constitution.

I might agree that the wrong people are often sent
to jail.

For example, Conrad Black is doing time. While they
were persecuting - sorry, prosecuting - him, the subprime
mortgage fraud was being perpetrated, on a TRILLION
dollar scale.

All of those criminals are free, and Conrad is in prison -
for what?

Hm.

DO NOT compare the Canadian and US prison systems; they are worlds apart in their approaches to corrections. The Canadian federal and BC provincial systems are treatment oriented and at the leading edge globally. The other provinces and territories are a little further behind, but moving in the right direction. The US system is primarily still punishment based.

There is no one size fits all approach to treating offenders. Programs have to be tailored to the specific criminogenic factors driving an offenders behaviour. Restoritive justice programs that require offenders to meet and make ammends with their victims and community aren't going to have much impact on a sociopath who is incapable of understanding or caring about anyone but themselves. They are going to need psychological and cognitive training programs. However, a drug addict or alcoholic who has been stealing from people in their community to feed a habit might benefit greatly from substance abuse programming followed by restoritive justice programming that helps reconnect them with the family, friends, and community they victimized.

Reverse racism .If he was not attached to the British House of Lords he would have been just another businessman hiding money from the tax-man .The Americans failure to protect their money from criminal speculating has led to a financial collapse that the world has never seen before. The jails may have to be filled with some of the Wall Street tycoons who have stolen that nations future. The side show of a small fry like Black made it look like the criminal justice system was going after white collar crime .The true depth of the fraud may never be found in wall street and there may not be enough jail space to house all the crooks involved in the looting of the american economy. While everyone was watching Martha Stewart and Conrad Black. The handclapping and theft continued without any oversight. This collapse will mean that people will move their money to "protected markets" .Markets that "take care" of would be criminals who try to steal from investors and shareholders.
