Hey, Im a student PPL pilot, looking for a headset. I probably would like to use it for many eyar if I look for a career in aviation. Is this a good deal for a good headset?:

Bought my DC's about 8 years ago for $450. Sounds like a decent deal but I would shop around. Most pilots will tell you that if your going to invest in a good headset, you may as well spend the extra dough on active noise reduction. worth its wieght in gold!

I have that exact headset, I actually got it from VIP too. They're worth every penny.

The same headset with Active Noise Reduction is about $800 :shock:
How much more noise does that reduce?

I'm not sure how much more noise it reduces, I don't have active noise reduction on mine, I am only going by what others have told me. but the theory of it, is that repeating noise is erased by the headset sending out the inverse sound wave. What i've been told is that it is worth the money.

Can any one out there confirm this?

As for sun glasses. the gel ear seals do a pretty good job of blending in around the arms. but how well they seal around your ears depends on the distance between your glasses arms and your head. If you have some form fitting Oakley type glasses then your ok. But if your wearing some big ol Ray Bans or something with wide lenses, the arms stick out from your head too much and the gel can't fill in the gap, so they don't seal that well.

I think you can buy little foam wedges that fit around the arms of your glasses to fill in the gaps...never tried them though.

Remeber....your headset is an investment. You will be wearing it on your head for many hours at a time. Don't let those many hours become hours of discomfort, thinking about why you went with the cheapest set on the market.

I have one of each my wife just got me the one with active noise reduction and it IS worth its weight in gold there are days that we would come back after a long day in the 99 and the ears are ringing but now it is golden.

I have 10-13S's and have flown with the 10-13X, like em alot, i'd say go for it, make sure the pair isn't designed to be panel powered though, you need the battery pack as i highly doubt any of the aircraft you would be training in will be set up for panel powered headsets

Well, somebody beat me on those.

What is the differnce between the H10-13X and the H10-13XL?

Does tha XL have the option of changing the connectors? Would that be better for future use in different planes?

Is it worth the $150 to get the XL? Couldnt I just buy adapters when the time comes? I found the H10-13X for $700CAD and the XL for $850CAD.

Anyone know of any place cheaper?

i think the adapter is more for going from mil, to helicopter, to civil, so i wouldn't worry about it, if your just training right now look into the plain 10-13.4's ANR's great but you wouldn't be realy needing it for awhile, and by the time you did your headset would be outdated, personaly i would buy a normal headset, get some earplugs if your realy conserned, and spend the extra money on something else, like renting after you get your licence and taking girls flying....unless your a girl, or on the otherside of the fence, then taking guys flying

lol, yea im a guy.

so do all planes have just that 2 plug thing? no need for anything else? i think i want the ANR and not just passive, if i can find some on ebay.

so the XL version is useless? I dont want to buy an $800 headset if I will not be able to use it in the future.

so would dash 8 and big prop planes as wella s general aviation planes all use that 2 pin plugs?

EDIT: All these adapters could be used, if needed, right? i prefer to save the $150 and buy an adapter if I need to in the future (probably wont need to):
