Aviation in Canada - What's happening these days?

Post by down3green »

How is aviation in Canada being affected by the crisis in the U.S?

I've been flying overseas now and the airlines here are starting to take a hit too...

just looking for opinions.
cheers!

Nice work Daveg.

You're cool. :prayer:

Actually down3green, it seems like the industry at this point is solid although the hiring spree from Air Canada and AC Jazz has come to a screeching halt. As for Westjet and Canadian North, they're still scooping a few guys and charter operators are doing the same. No company has gone "Belly Up" that I know of (mind you, it's only been a week or so) yet...

How are things overseas?

Yours,

CADORS

Cough Cough, Zoom!
ok that was a month ago now but ya.
Canadian global air Ambulance never got back off the ground.

I think its time to hang onto whatever seat you have in this game and ride it for awhile not a time to be moving. I think there will be cuts soon and its a wait and see game for now.

Thanks CADORS. It's good to see things are still solid. Here in South America hiring has come to a stop at the majors but the regionals and charter ops are still hiring some people.

Aviation in Canada can get a lot worse than that.

To put this thread back on track, if you want to know where Canadian aviation will be, just look at the United States.

Canada generally lags a year or so behind the US.

There is a world-wide credit crunch going on, commodities (the engine of the Canadian economy) are deflating big time, housing is now entering into a downturn, manufacturing and forestry are in dire straights, the price of oil is still outside the design envelope of most airline business models, I could go on...

The next fews are going to be very tough for a lot of people, in not just aviation but in a lot industries. If you have a high seniority number at AC, you'll should be okay.

If you're a 200 hour pilot with $50,00 in student loans looking to break into the industry, may God help you.

Schools are still looking for instructors. And it has always been hard for 200 hour lads to find jobs.

Right now that may be the case. Six months from now may be a totally different story.

Don't assume that getting an instructor job is a given.

In the years following 9-11, the flight training industry contracted. You had instructors quitting their schools for lack of work, and schools going under.

If you were a Class IV, getting a job would have been very tough as there were a lot of unemployed instructors who were looking for work. And the ones who were "working" were starving, a lot of them, as they only get paid when they have students.

Some schools would "hire" all their Class IVs, but I put hire in quotes because all you had was a whole bunch of guys sitting around not getting paid in the staff room.

good points...and people are still retiring too (though their investments may not be worth much :? )
ATAC predicted the peak of pilot retirements would happen in 2007. And you saw a pretty big hiring spike in 2007.

I wouldn't put much stock in the retirements thing... the wider economic issues are much more significant.

The only question being how long this breakdown is going to take...
