Victim of 911 Wants to fly again

Post by Blue Streak »

Hey dudes and dudettes,

400 TT

Expired Multi-IFR with current medical

No kids/36 years old/single

I figure it'll cost me at least $10,000 to re-new my Multi-IFR,it's been a while.I wonder really if it is all worth it really being a home owner,Harley Davidson owner etc. etc. to pay a pile of bucks to be eligible to hand in a resume to make $8 bucks an hour on the ground?

I work in manufacturing and it ain't what I picture myself doing forever but it pays good and times a wastin' away on me here. But I am already set-up in life!

Anyone else in the same boat here?Bad timing again to jump into this isn't it....hmm

cheers guys,(I can't stop thinking about flying for a living)--everytime I see West Jet in the climb my heart is torn!!!

Seeing the manufacture industry these days, you can't say your job is very secure eighter. If you have anything saved up, I'd go for it. Renew everything part time and by the time you're all done Hopefully in the March timeframe, you should be in good shape to apply for a job, provided the aviation market improves a little.

Harleys and Houses are a dime a dozen - they're in every town I've ever lived in. Tack the $10k on your mortgage and have a crack at it. If something turns up next spring, rent/sell your house, 'Get your motor running/head out on the highway' etc... If it happens, then great, if not, then you had a shot at it, and it didn't work out. Are you ready, though, at 36, and with some comfort in your life, to take the pay hit to slog away for sh!t in the right seat or on the ground somewhere?

The other option would be to split the difference, get an instructor rating, and teach part-time. You'll do ok financially with your day job, and then get the flying fix on the weekends..

I lost my flying job right after 911, November of 2001. Was out of it for 6 years. Bought a house and we had a kid. I took a chance and got my IFR back and it cost me nowhere near $10K.
Cat I medical = $100.00
IFR exam = $55.00
4 flights on a PA-44 seminole including IFR ride = $900.00
TC examiner = $200.00 plus some SIM time. Total cost for me was about $1500.00. Really. Now I'm flying a jet making a lot more than my "non-flying" job. Hard work and a supportive wife is all it took. I did have a job lined up before I spent any money.
