just another catsa rant.

Post by flyincanuck »

...again.

I'm dead-heading in civies. I've been going through the same screening area everyday for the last 2 months.

It's 4am and they decide to rip apart my carry-on after I show them my boarding and red pass (which is fine, they're entitled to).

I'm told that my cologne and gel bottles are too large (here we go) and I'll have to check my luggage. Not a chance. I mention that I've brought the same two bottles through screening everyday for the last 2 months, to which they reply, "well you're not in uniform". For serious :smt104? What difference should that make? If you are banning items, then ban them...don't make up your own rules. I flipped open the cover of my suitcase and pointed at the uniform shirt and looked at her. Didn't matter...I had to be wearing it, apparently.

With not much time to spare, I reluctantly changed, and went through security without a problem.

The icing on the cake is that they were more concerned about my gel and cologne than the four Mach 3 razor blades I had sitting right next to the gel bottle.

It's letter time to catsa, but here's to ridding a little of my frustration!

First off, I can understand your frustration because Catsa peeps are heeuge piles

But on the other hand, does your airline require you to be in uniform to deadhead?

I used to commute in my uniform just because it cut down on the BS in the security lines.

Yeah, I still get my laptop tested, and opened every 2 weeks in YZF. I guess the laptop bomb makers in YK are still at it and making security tight

I'd love to have a red pass to even help me out. I'm commuting across 2 provinces for work and sometimes like to bring my headset home (let alone liquids or gels) and I get treated like a communist spy on my way through airport security. I always carry my licences and logbook with my headset but the simply fact that I'm traveling with a piece of pilot equipment sets them off. Once in Edmonton I was almost denied entirely because they couldn't understand why I would have it on my carry on (fair enough).

Certainly not fair enough! Checked bags go missing or are broken into and contents stolen -perhaps by crooked baggage handlers and security jobsworths. You can easily borrow or buy another shirt or wash the one you are wearing but it is not so easy to replace specialised work tools such as a headset, gps etc. Always carry these valuable and hard to quickly replace items in carry on baggage or your pockets and keep your eye on them.

Every time anyone has a problem with these obstructive characters get their names or numbers and file a formal complaint. Copy it to the media and the politicians. If necessary, name and shame the culprits on forums such as this and on open line shows. We have a right to protect ourselves against abuse. It's too bad that so many Canadians are wimps and kowtow to so-called public servants who are on a power trip. If the security goons do not like this then the answer is for them to do their jobs in a responsible and intelligent manner.

Intelligence?

What qualifications do they need to get hired?

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

You give people with a grade 6 education and 6 months in country some power...what do you expect? Aw, did I step on somebody's widdle toes...I care! I'd far rather drive when it's an option.

It's sad that you're proud to be a racist, Doc. After your post about reparations to the First Nations, I figured I'd ignore it and move on, but this post sure shows a trend. I'm sure you're a fine pilot, but your social skills leave much to be desired.

Oh, don't forget to pick up your white hood at the dry cleaners.

Racist???

What did Doc say that made you jump to that conclusion?

Like Doc, rather than put up with the crap that one has to suffer to get on an airplane I will take any other form of transportation if I have a choice that is acceptable.

Air travel has turned into the most customer unfriendly business in society.

Maybe I'm imagining that

is referring to immigrants? Really? Is "in country" some term that old people use that I've never heard? You tell me.

I've got no arguments that CATSA is out of hand. I worked for them for 4 years... believe me I know. I just want to point out that Doc is making racist comments that are entirely outside of the issues that make CATSA useless.

B.S. since when is it racist to point out many of these security people may be immigrants?

Lots of people immigrate from countries that are the same race as Doc..or you or me..

This knee jerk calling people "racist" " homophobic " biggoted " etc. is enough to make a person want to throw up.

It's called stereotyping, .. He's insinuating that all of the frontline CATSA people are immigrants and that all immigrants like to be able to take advantage of the "locals". It's an extension of the bullshit that people on here like to claim about immigrants stealing Canadians' jobs while simultaneously claiming that immigrants are all abusing our social safety net.
You might be ok with that, but I'm not. There's a lot of valuable information to be had on these boards after you sort through the crap. Unfortunately I sometimes get irritated enough with the crap to respond. I should know better.

Yeah sorry years ago I might have agreed with you Guido but living abroad now and meeting many, many people whose sole purpose in life is to get into Canada and exploit the sh*t out of the system (which sadly, allows them because of mindsets like yours), I have very low tolerance for certain "new immigrants". Give it a few generations to see how fully people adopt the country and actually contribute more than they take and we'll see.

I have to agree with Guido. To point out the people at Catsa's pathetic power trip is somehow related to their being new to the country is absurd. Just look at the prics at YZF they're all white and anyone who travels through there regularly will attest to them being the worst in the country. It was a completely unnecessary comment and completely irrelevant.

At the end of the day, the things that frustrate us tend to be an overly stringent interpretation of their regulations and responsibilities with an utter disregard for common sense, eg the excellent post that started this thread.

IM glad we can all agree. Catsa are all a pain in the arse. including the uneducated immigrants who just arrived, the immigrants who have been here a while, the locals, and any other group you wanna call them. always a pain in the but.

What can be done about them? since we are the pilot group why is it we can't make a change in our work environment? you'd think if anyone could it would be us..

Whether or not they are immigrants or home born they are making travel by airline so frustrating and unpleasant that people are finding other means of travel when they can.

Arguing about being politically correct is so Canadian though that some of you don't see the real problem.....its your regulators...they are the ones who force this on you.

But hey what the hell you live in the greatest country in the world so bending over for one more moron with some power is A.O.K..

Would this NOT be considered "racist"? Referring to a group as "all white"? And "prics" in the same sentence? I don't recall referring to any "race, colour or creed".......Seems to be Okay here to dump on white persons???? Well it just is NOT OKAY. Are you ashamed to be white? Maybe some should pull their heads out of their politically correct asses and smell the roses?

Guido give your head a shake. Doc did not say anything in his post that any of us had not thought about...nor was his post "racist". I listen to the PC bunch and you have deffinately been "brainwashed" into believing that all Canadians are racists, bigots, homo crap, etc.

And if you think that the new Cdns are so great just ask an old Air Canada Captain about some new Cdn from South Asia who tried to remove the gold wings from his jacket at YVR.

Y'know, you're right. I heard about this white guy who once hung a black guy just because he was black. Therefore all white guys are racist murderers. Thank you so much for pointing out the error in my ways.
