Regina Radio at Stony Rapids (CYSF)

Post by jkellner »

I fly regularly into the Stony Rapids (CYSF) and Fond du Lac (CZFD) area in northern Saskatchewan. CYSF is an MF handled by Regina Radio & CZFD is 41 NM west and is an ATF.

I can't understand why Regina Radio at Stony Rapids is not allowed to give us their current winds & altimeter setting when we're flying into Fond du Lac. They are "right there" on the frequency, probably have PIREPS - or if not an official PIREP, then pilot comments - about current conditions and are rarely too busy to pass this information on.

I guess my point is that in this location it makes sense to be able to get this information from Regina Radio. In more congested and busy MF areas it may be impractical or even unsafe (due to radio congestion) for a RAAS to have this extra burden, but I don't think this applies in this area.

Any comments?

Personally, I'd give you the wind and altimeter. However, I think I heard on the grape vine that Regina specifically got spanked for this recently so that's why they are being sticklers.

Why are they not allowed to? That's what Winnipeg Radio is for.

Actually in the Athabasca corridor Edmonton radio handles all FSS calls through the 26.7 RCO at stony. Why they don't relay the winds and altimeter could have to do with the fact that they also handle traffic relays for Buffalo Narrows and could potentially (perhaps) give wrong information to pilots. I've been flying in that area now for a year and have yet to have a pilot file an actual PIREP with FSS. The current trend on my flight deck is to listen on Stony's frequency while in the area. That airport has so many movements in a day its at most 10 min between hearing the latest sequence or catching the winds and altimeter report for other traffic.

Whoops, total brain fart, you're absolutely right. It is Edmonton Radio there.
