Good save by FSS!

Post by Donald »

Good job looking out for the crew and making a timely call.
Detail InformationUser Name: Ridley, Rod

O.P.I.: Commercial & Business Aviation
Narrative: CNK 432, a Beech 1900 operated by Sunwest Aviation, was inbound to High Level and FSS advised the crew of the weather conditions and runway conditions. The crew did the VOR Runway 31 approach. FSS subsequently observed the aircraft approaching to the left of the runway and advised the crew to pull up as they were on very short final for the infield beside the runway, not the actual runway. On their second approach, FSS again advised the crew that they were on approach for the infield. The aircraft landed safely on the runway on the third approach. FSS reported that High Level had been receiving snow all morning and the runway was 100% snow-covered. Although FSS had turned the runway lights to maximum, when they came out of cloud in low visibility, the crew twice mistook the darker, unmowed grass to the left of the runway as the runway. ah ha! Nice. I almost did that once, but Red Deer FSS said nothing! I managed to mosie on over to the runway in the flare when I realized I was not over the runway. The illusion was quite convincing with similar conditions of blowing snow.

It happenned to a Dash-8 not too too long ago IIRC. Can't remember where. I think the immatriculation was C-FDND. There is a report on the incident...

Peace River. The guy touched down between the runway and taxiway C, pulled up and went around when FSS noticed at the last second, and landed safely in Edmonton afterwards
