Tool Completion Forecast
When is your tool set complete?
A) After four years of buying tools.
B ) After 8 years of buying tools.
C ) Never, ever done.
I'm thinking its either B or C.
But I'm just curious.

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
In all my (10) years of experience, I've found the following rule applies:
The amount of tools a mechanic has is inversely proportional to the amount he actually uses them.
I've managed to go from big tin to puddle jumpers, huge hangars to in the bush, with one Craftsman roll cabinet that can easily be triaged into a large bush box.
The guys who have the $10,000 Snap On rolling apartment blocks usually spend more time polishing their tools than actually using them.

[quote="Jungle Jim"]The guy with the most tools wins!
I agree!
After about 4 years I found I rarely ever borrowed a tool that I needed. It starts to become more of a want than a need.
example: I started out with a $40 pair of lockwire pliers made by champion and I was getting by with them. But those smaller, more versitile, reversible pair made by blue point were a must have. I use them every day, so it was worth the $160.
I recently picked up a pair of wrench pliers made by brown tool. They are awesome!!! and only about $50. For those of you who dont know what they are; they are shaped like an adjustable wrench at the jaw, but clamp down like a channel lock.
Great tool!

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
You talking about the Knipex? Yes they are handy. Can get them from Brown tool and heck even Crap-on has them at an inflated price.
How can you tell which one is the pilot when you walk into a bar?....Don't worry he will come up and tell you.

I believe the technical name for them is "Super Dupers" or "Magic Pliers".

Yes, they are the Knipex. The name wasn't coming to me when I posted the reply.
I think I'll call them "Super Dupers" as well!

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
Oh man, I don't have the mini-dupers. I guess I have to buy more tools after all.
But I am NOT buying the half-moon ratcheting wrench set just because they came out with it. I can think of better reasons to part with $50.

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
The only size you need is the 10". It gets as small as 3/8" and as large as about 1-1/4". $50 well spent!

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
If you've ever worked on British aircraft you'd appreciate a set of mini dupers.
Everything an American manufacturer would have made 3/8 or 5/16 is 7/32 or 9/32 or some other frikken tiny oddball size. I thought I was going to kill myself working on Islanders and Shorts.

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
Cant say that I have worked on those. Those shorts are they Irish? I would hate to need a set of metric tools as well. Already sucks that my car requires a different set of tools.iflyforpie wrote:If you've ever worked on British aircraft you'd appreciate a set of mini dupers.

I don't think we ever complete our tool set until either we die or retire! and once you retire could anyone actually sell their tools?
Unless they were passed down to my kids.......I'd
rather take them with me!

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
I am a real took freak, I have tools I never get to use.
I was wondering what will happen to my tools when I die and decided the thing to do was make sure someone comes to my funeral....
...so what I'm going to do is have all my tools at my funeral all laid out on the floor free for the taking....
...that otta at least attract a few mechanics to my funeral.
Another idea might be free beer so they can get drunk and argue over who gets what.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Tool Completion Forecast
I'll come to your funeral Cat....I might need some tools if I keep forgeting them in my pockets and the FU**ing tools at CATSA keep trying to grab them.
A$$holes.....
I personally bought a tool if I had to borrow it more than 2 times, unless it was really expensive. I'd also buy a tool if it saved me a pile of time.
My theory is that tools don't go bad, they will last your lifetime to be sure, and all of your retired friends will be jealous when they see your toolbox in the garage when the time comes. LOL!
Cheers,
