Politically correct continues....

Post by Topspin »

Fifth-grader Jordan Hood thought the bloody vampire he drew in art class was scary, but he had no idea it would elicit a horrifying response from one of his teachers.

Tuesday morning, Jordan was assigned to draw a scary Halloween mask in art class.

By the end of the day, Jordan was being told he could not return to Pooler Elementary School until he passed a psychological evaluation.

"We live in an age where there is some hypersensitivity," Bucky Burnsed, Savannah-Chatham school system spokesman, said Thursday. "But the child is back in school where he belongs."

During art class Tuesday, Jordan drew a scarred vampire with bloodshot eyes and with blood dripping from its nose, mouth and down its cheeks. Art teacher Lloyd Harold helped the boy shade the sketched eyes to give the drawing an even creepier look.

"The assignment was to draw a scary mask or picture - basically a Halloween activity," Harold said.

As a final gory touch, Jordan used a red marker to write "I Kill For Blood" under his drawing.

The picture was not destined for the cover of Fangoria magazine, but it fulfilled the requirement for fifth-grade Halloween art.

However, when Jordan's homeroom teacher, Melissa Pevey, saw the drawing, she found it disturbing. Pevey was concerned enough to contact assistant principal Valerie Johnson and Campus Police.

But it wasn't blood and gore that bothered Pevey. She believed the blood looked a lot like gang-related teardrop tattoos, and she thought the words "I Kill For Blood" could be tied to an infamous Los Angeles street gang known as The Bloods.

Jordan's mother, LaKisha Hood, was shocked to find that her son's art lesson had evolved into a gang investigation.

"They told me the droplets could actually be a gang symbol for the number of people he killed," she said.

Burnsed said the district has asked teachers to be wary of anything that might be harmful to students. He also said the district has provided gang-identification training.

He did not know whether classroom teachers were trained in gang symbolism.

"The teacher was concerned and referred it to the Campus Police," Burnsed said. "(Campus Police Capt. Joan) Sasser wasn't sure that it meant anything."

So they resolved the issue by requiring Jordan to undergo psychological testing with Gateway Mental Health.

Jordan's family didn't want him to miss school, so he went in for testing first thing Wednesday morning - getting him back to school in time for the fall dance that afternoon.

Although he only lost about two hours of instruction, his mother fears the incident also might cost him a bit of innocence and trust.

"He didn't know anything about gang symbols until the teacher accused him," she said. "We moved to Pooler thinking he'd be in a more diverse school with better opportunities.

"And so far, it hasn't been a pleasant experience."

Wow...there is no hope for us. And the gang related graffiti, there's got to be more to this story, I have a tough time believing anyone is that stupid.

He kinda looks like Hitler, may the kid is a neo-nazi?

Now, what if it were a little girl instead of the boy? Would reaction be the same?

People need to calm the phack down.

If mom's name is Lakisha, I suspect it's safe to bet he's not a neo-nazi!

Sad state of affairs in the US when anyone would even remotely consider the possibility of a grade 5 kid already being drawn into a street gang. Absurd as it would seem to us in most of Canada though, I'd bet the teacher's reaction is based on previous experience.

A few years back, one of my kids made a movie on
the weekend. I thought it was cute - it was a mystery,
the sort of thing you see on TV. All the kids had great
fun dressing up.

Now the horror story begins - one of the kids made
the mistake of bringing the DVD to school. Holy
sh1t. You would have thought that the Pope had
been raped. The school administration went completely
bananas over the video, because it was a murder
mystery - somebody got shot at the start of the
story, and they tried to solve it.

This plot device is used about 100,000 times
every evening on every episode of CSI, every
cop show ever made, etc but I guess school
administrators don't know much about what's
on TV.

Psychological assessments and interviews
were conducted. The offending DVD was
righteously siezed.

Jesus Christ, what a tempest in a teapot. And
these teachers are being paid $100,000 a
year, with the biggest, fattest pension plan
on the planet

I can only imagine what horror these politically
correct idiots would endure if they could travel
back in time, and watch all the boys play
cowboys and indians, or cops and robbers,
shooting toy guns at each other. I presume
such politically incorrect behaviour has long
since been outlawed.

Heavens to Betsy!

I know a few teachers and think more along the lines of $30000 would be correct and might explain the reaction to a simple dvd, the same as in aviation you get what you pay for.

$30000
(per year, for a teacher)

You're not in Ontario, obviously, where teachers, vice-principals
and principals are routinely paid three and four times that amount.
Plus their fat-cat pensions! Plus every summer off!

Where do you live, Somalia?

P.S. My kids are off school today - its a "Professional Development"
day at their school. I guess the highly-paid teachers didn't have enough
time over their 2.5 month summer holiday to develop themselves
professionally, so they have to do it on the kids time instead

Here is a good one

During Halloween this year, the Toronto School Board announced that it was seriously thinking of stopping Halloween Celebrations at schools and calling it Black and Orange Day.
Now most of you will think that it is because of the protest of various religions being critical of devil worship etc...
Well not so ....The Board was worried that celebratibng Halloween somehow would be an insult to students that may have grown up in a WICA Religion household....wait it gets better.........Reporters asked just how many WICA Religion students were attending Toronto Schools aand the Board stated that it was not even sure if there were any..........Reporters then contacted the Wica Church of Canada. The WCC responded that celebrating Halloween no more insulted Wicas , than celebrating Xmas would insult Christians. The WCC spokesperson even admitted that she was dressing up and going to a Halloween Party.
UNBELIEVEABLE what the F#@K is going on.
This Schoolboard has way too much time on their hands.
There are alot more serious issues within the education system than this ............complete and utter madness ........stupid ....stupid ....stupid.

Yeah....that's one of the reasons I pulled the pin on my teaching career. Sadly, shit often floats to the top (VP, Principal and higher). However most of the classroom teachers are pretty level headed (at least the science/math/tech types I used to work with; I'm not so sure about the right brained English/artsie types). I contrast some of my former professional conversations ('How do we build a classroom that is inclusive of our rich cultural diversity') to some of the idle chit chat yesterday in the ready room ('I think a 7.62 x39 is better than 5.56 because it will go through a tree and STILL vapourize that mofo's head'). It'd be really entertaining to get those two groups together with some hard liqour..... :smt040

Hey, you take that insult to us left-handers back! I'll have you know there's an unusually high percentage of left-handed pilots out there. not to mention 80% of pilots are scared of heights!
