work with just a float rating?
this might be better suited for employment forum, but i'll post here anyways...
i am looking for any suggestions for places to look for work on floats in ontario in '09. i just have a rating, some tail wheel time and over 1000tt. am very reluctant to pay for a "50 hr. bush course". i also have a mech's m1 ticket. something that doesn't require only working on the dock for the first season. i wouldn't mind flying some tail wheel as well.
if anyone has some suggestions pm me if you like or post them.
thanks,
sos

Re: work with just a float rating?
There are tonns of places in and around Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, Ear Falls, Kenora, Vermillion Bay, Dryden, Fort Frances and Nestor Falls areas. A little further east there is Armstrong and Nakina. I haven't flown floats for a while but heard the insurance requirements are higher now (200hrs some companies) but not sure. Somebody on this forum can probably enlighten you some more.

7hr rating = 2 years on the doc
50hr bush course and you'll work the doc but get some flying time in a 180 or 185 during that first doc season.
200hrs and you should be able to find something that involves straight flying.
all rules are meant to be broken

The real problem you will have is who taught you.
If a pilot came to me with xxx hours of training on floats the first question I would ask is who was your instructor.
So how many training facilities are there out there with instructors who know the subject of bush flying through experience in same?
When you find the answer to that question you will know where to go to learn.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Very true, couldn't agree more however: after 7 hours with the best instructor in the world is still not nearly enough to send out passengers safely with (re: your mother!) It just isn't.The real problem you will have is who taught you.
The learning curve is still just too steep for the general paying public IMHO.

Agreed seven hours is no where near enough, what I was driving at was for them to make sure whoever they go to for training is not just another puppy mill with instructors who have never flown sea planes for a living.

Re: work with just a float rating?
what i meant by "50 hour bush course" was that some operators have a a proper sightseeing/charter/outpost camp business and also run a 50 hr. bush course. so you fork out 12g's or so and the may hire you as a dock guy. i don't like this idea. ideally i am interested in applying to places where you fly with an experienced guy on empty legs, for example, work the dock as well as opposed to only working the dock.shower of sparks wrote:this might be better suited for employment forum, but i'll post here anyways...
