Oh get over it... if anything some of the best role models among the athletic world are hockey players. There's very few amongst the NFL, that's for sure.

And "shot and pissed on"... relax.

Here's another role model for you:
often referred to as Mr. Hockey, and is generally regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time, being most famous for his scoring prowess, physical strength, and the longevity of his career. He is the only player to have competed in the NHL in five different decades ... recipient of the first NHL Lifetime Achievement Award ... In a feat unsurpassed by any athlete, in any sport, he finished in the top five in scoring for twenty straight seasons.

I'm old enough to remember watching Gordie Howe
play, and he could be a really dirty sonofabitch when
the ref wasn't looking:
It is said that a Gordie Howe hat trick was a goal, an assist, and a fight.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere, that he never actually got the "Hat Trick" that is named after him?

I have to say though, I will always be a hockey fan. As for the fighting, I'm on the fence, I don't care either way. But no other sport combines the speed, finesse, intensity and physicality. I honestly think it is the greatest sport in the world!

NFL as opposed to NHL? NFL has Plaxico Burress, Pacman Jones, Michael Vick and countless other criminals, I rest my case. Avery refuses to fight anyone he thinks mightt kick his ass. He'll try to hunt down the guys that never fight but the second he's challenged by someone willing and able to go he hides behind the refs. That's why everyone hates him. Darcy Tucker is considered a pest too but he'll back his BS, Avery won't. And yes, Doc..fighting IS a part of the game. There is no fighting in playoffs because people are not likely to take liberties with opposing teams skill players if it could cost them a penalty and potentially the game. they try it during the regular season, hence the enforcers to straighten them out and to let them know there will be consequences for cheap shots. The people on this forum who have played hockey at a reasonably high level understand this.

Well as of this a.m. , it looks like his actions might cost him his career.
There are statements from his Coach , Team Captain and goalie all saying that they do not want him back on the Team.

Oh, he'll play... he's got 3 more years at 4 million a piece. He just might be down in the minors, but that I also doubt. Hull already said he'll be playing.

I still don't understand why a good laugh can't be had and move on. We all know he's an asshole... no one likes him, but he sure is good entertainment on and off the ice.

Ah, whatever... couldn't give a shit about Dallas and their problems anyway.

It's occurred to me that Avery thinks he's actually promoting the game and getting people interested by his bullshit. If I wanted to see crap like that, I'd watch WWF or whatever the hell they call it these days. The NHL doesn't need 'stuntmen'.

I'm always amused at the irony of PILOTS arriving at the AIRPLANE dressed in suits, when half of them probably can't even knot their own tie, and are frequently lost when it comes to deciding between the appropriate use of there/their/they're, or your/you're.

PILOTS are for the most part overpaid, under-educated slobs...etc...

NHL players are for the most part overpaid, under-educated slobs that the league often attempts to portray as having the pedigree of a British Polo enthusiast.

Do you even follow hockey? Do you know any players personally? Cause it honestly just sounds like you have a personal vendetta against the sport and are just pulling nonsense out of your ass.

And yeah Hedley, we know you think Cherry's a joke... hockey too I guess. But we already played that game in your other thread and you had nothing to say. Anyone interested in knowing why fighting is a necessity, see

viewtopic.php?f=49&t=48704

You guys chirp the players of the NHL... but in reality, they have done more for their communities than the NBA or NFL guys have. If we had a couple rapists and murderers, we could be just like them.

Fighting is necessary in hockey to get the TV ratings
that the NHL wants

In most American cities, yes. In Canadian cities, no.

Ok, I will admit, fighting is not a "necessity" for hockey, but it is for NHL hockey. Remove that element from the game and the whole thing changes. It would be like taking out field goals from football or stealing bases from baseball. It's a strategic part of the game.

One day, it may not be around as they have eliminated at most other levels of hockey... But for now, in the game today at the professional level, fights gotta happen.

If you don't think fighting is necessary in hockey, just watch the Europeans play in something other than the Olympics or the World Championships. The stick work can be absolutely vicious! If somebody is going to knock your teeth down your throat, you're much less likely to try to carve him up with your stick.

Fighting was part of the game way before it was nationally televised. Check out the history of hockey in Canada before you jerk your knee again!

Well, corruption in politics in Canada has quite the
history, too - does that mean it should always be
that way?
The Pacific Scandal involves the allegations of bribes being taken by Canada's Conservative government of Sir John A. Macdonald.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Scandal

I might also mention that Jean Cretin ordered
the government bank to buy his hotel, and Brian
Mulroney took substantial bribes, both while PM.

And who can forget that psychotic, William Lyon
Mackenzie King, who's government was brought
down by outlandish corruption during Prohibition?

Are those good things, too, because political
corruption in Canada has a long history?

That's a specious argument, Greg.

Wow, that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic we were discussing. You can't come up with a decent argument to defend yourself, so you trash Canadian politics. Okay. :?

Sean Avery is the biggest asshole to strap on skates, and I would love nothing more then to see him get a career ending injury on the ice.

This guy does not deserve the life he has.
