VANCOUVER, B.C. - A B.C. Mountie who was called to a residence in September 2006 to keep the peace as a woman in a violent relationship moved out of her home has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.
The charge against Const. Ed Fox of the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment was sworn Tuesday. While Fox and another officer were at the woman's residence, the male in the relationship arrived home and police say he began causing a disturbance.
The man was arrested and alleged that excessive force was used.
"During the arrest, there was some sort of physical altercation which resulted in the male being punched by the police officer," Sgt. Tim Shields said.
"This is where the allegation of excessive force comes from."
Shields said Fox did not deploy a weapon during the altercation.
An internal RCMP investigation was launched and submitted to Crown Counsel.
The Crown then asked for a separate written opinion by a use of force expert.
"The use of force expert came back with the opinion that the force used was not justified," Shields said.
Fox, who is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Port Coquitlam on Jan. 21, 2009, remains on active duty, though his status is currently under review.

The taser is currently being tested, diagnosed, soldered, cut, tweaked, analyzed, and being disassembled.
The new taser will be available in 2009 with triple the voltage rating, but with the same old stickers.
Job security. Make something that is very strong, so strong, you have to go back and fix it so that it
is "acceptable" to the public.
You sell the stronger versions to the wealthy, who can afford the 3000% I-have-the-best-weapon royalty tax.
