Cool pics, But I thought that to drop anything out of an aircraft, you need to wear a chute?
I could be wrong, as I'm sure that the MNR would follow all the regs

I believe the reg only states that you cannot drop anything if it poses a threat to persons or property. I don't remember anything about wearing a chute.

No such regulation. Not sure where you dug that up from!! MNR has been dropping stuff from airplanes and helicopters for almost 80 years and don't own any parachutes.

Just from a picture, how do you tell the difference between a 215T and a 415?

Well, I know that dropping skydivers the pilot needs a chute, and I'm pretty sure that somewhere in the regs it says that any air drop needs one. I'll look into it.

Hmmm, guess I'm wrong, can't find it. All I can find is that you can't create a "hazard" to anyone or thing. Not too sure how to drop something from an aircraft without creating a hazard, but at least you don't need a chute :smt040

yeah the skydive pilot i was with didn't wear one. and as long as you aren't aiming at a person or property (building) you aren't posing a hazard. (see amatuer flower bombing competetions)

Took me a while to figure out what you were talking about, but I'm pretty sure that the pic of the helo with the bag going out the door would have been taken from the boat maybe 6 feet below. A chute isn't going to help.

There are regs you are correct .. There are also exemptions in the form of commercial ops specs .. The picture is of fire hose being free dropped to fire crews on the ground that are building line around a fire front, hose lays can be miles long through areas where there are no landing areas and if the crews carried the hose from the landing area the fire would likely have burned over the area we are trying to contain . There also ops specs we use for entering or exiting an aircraft while it is in flight (no parachute) . For fire fighting , preservation of human life and operating under authourity of a police agency there are many exemptions . Water bucketing , water bombing and dropping of supplies are only a few..

Johnny the only way is if the waterdoors are in the picture. The 215T has the old system which is 2 larger drop doors on the bottom of the hull and the 415 has 4 smaller doors. You can also tell if the picture is of the cockpit. The 415 is glass and the 215T has the older style instruments.

That is a Caravan my friend.... and it's in a place called Sinak in West Papua, Indonesia. Runway is at 7000' with a 12% incline. You usually land with close to full power cause of the altitude... and sink you get off that little bump at then end of the runway. Doesn't look like much but it sure has some effect.

Cheers.
