I know that Field Aviation does long test flights on their Dash 8 300 projects. Could this be on of them?

Nothin in the CADORS for ACA191 so it was not an emergency. I'm guessing destination weather related.

Airplanes sometimes required test flight in a "cold soak" situation. Sometimes, you simply can't simulate the actual conditions encountered in flight, so you have to take the airplane in the air, let it get cold and the you can check what is required. I remember a few years ago we had to do one with our Global Express because the water system had a tendency to freeze in flight. If it freezes. The problem is if it freeze, it may break and leak water all over the floor of the airplane which may get in the avionics bay.

I'm not saying that this specific flight is a "cold soak" test, but they do exist and are done regularly.

Look within the URL...it says "...ident=ACA191...". Air Canada 191 is a sched flight, not a test flight of any sort, which turned back to Pearson for some reason.
