Northern Greenland Airports
Hello,
I am trying to find a way to get a Bell 407 up to northern Greenland for a contract. It would be going to the Citronen Fjord/Station Nord area. I have done an extensive search on every piece of flight planning software I could find for airports in that area, but the closest few I could find were Alert, Qaanaau, and Thule AFB. I'd be looking at max legs of about 250 nm, but each of these airports is at least 500 nm from the operating area I am looking at. I know there has to be a bunch of unlisted strips all around there...does anyone know what some of them are and if they would sell fuel? Any information you could provide would be helpful.
Thanks!

Try contacting a Danish authority - there is likely a consulate or embassy in Ottawa. The RDAF flies up there, so does (not Wideroe, I meant) Air Greenland.

Give these guys a shout. They are always helpful when we pop over with local knowledge and vis versa. They also run some BStars I think so should beable to help you out unless you are stealing soup from their bowl then who knows.

Re: Northern Greenland Airports
Thanks guys. I was thinking about calling Air Greenland but like you said was worried I'd be bidding against them on this one. The linked map pretty much sums it up...there's not much there!
Re: Northern Greenland Airports
Can't you just put 2 55-gal drums in the back, then land somewhere and pump it into the fuel tanks? That should double your range to 500nm.

Re: Northern Greenland Airports
Borek could probably fly in some drums of fuel at spots enroute for ya.
They have skis if your going to land on snow, or can probably land offstrip somewhere for ya

Two drums won't do it. You need to bring at least 6 and that's only if you're not planning on doing anything while you're there. He probably wants to return as well you see._dwj_ wrote:Can't you just put 2 55-gal drums in the back, then land somewhere and pump it into the fuel tanks? That should double your range to 500nm.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you!

Re: Northern Greenland Airports
I have flown in there and there is nothing between Thule and there -- Nord is the closest (in Greenland)-- it was $1200/night/per person -- might be more now - the only way to fuel cash is do your own or charter -- easiest way -- get them to build an ice strip -- take that puppy apart and put in a HERC -- or get permission to leave from Alert -- likely less that 200 miles
Black Air has no Lift - Extra Fuel has no Weight

CYLT doesn't keep AVGAS on hand - at least not officially.
Re: Northern Greenland Airports
Make a little note on your SAR info sheet - Bell 407s don't burn AVGAS as a rule. They can but they really don't like too.SAR_YQQ wrote:CYLT doesn't keep AVGAS on hand - at least not officially.
The problem here is getting permission to operate through Alert. If you're not there on a DND or other government mission, I have never seen it approved. But then, I've only been operating in and out of there since 1987 so there may have been some occurrences I missed! Is your last name Harper?
Anyone here remember the Stearman that ended up there? There were a lot of people trying to figure out how to get it home!

Actually, I was wondering how to get it to my home.

Re: Northern Greenland Airports
Buffalo Airways went there two and a half years ago to fetch a down CHL 206. Maybe call around there and ask if they have any tips. Jim Meritt was one of the captains. Although they did it in a DC4 but still worth a shot.
Still weeerkin on it
Re: Northern Greenland Airports
The Stearman (and the enormous black guy flying it) made it to the North Pole (2000 or early 2001) as planned. Shortly after he encountered "engine problems" and set it down without killing himself or destroying the airplane. Last I had heard, which was a few years ago, he was trying to organize a recovery mission so the aircraft in question could take it's rightful place in the Smithsonian along side it equally famous brethren the Wright Flyer. Seesh.
