Attaching Aluminum Skins on Wood

Post by Rudder Bug »

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of building a set of wooden wings for my VJ-22 Volmer. They are quite much like the Aeronca 7AC. The plan is more about the fuselage so there's no instructions for the wings. It calls for aluminum leading edges.

One of my puzzles right now is how should we attach the aluminum leading edges to the spars and nose ribs? I've read that epoxying them is a nono. I am almost contemplating plywood leading edges only for that reason.

Apparently, the Interstate Cadet, an aircraft somewhat ressembling a Piper or Taylor had them nailed.

Any hints will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Rigpiggy

Thanks for your input.

I have decided to use metal spars and the aluminum skin will be bent 90 degrees and riveted to the spar.

Are you a homebuilder too?

Cheers
