Airport Discrimation

Post by Navajo Flyer »

Just a quick question to the airport operators. Where can I find the law that allows airport operators the power to determine who can use their airport? I find that some airport operators are discriminating against some operators or types of operations. For example, it is my understanding that the City Centre Airport in Edmonton doesn't allow regular scheduled "charter" flights in and out of there, unless they originate from north of Edmonton, what about the guys that have developed flights from the south of Edmonton. Aren't airports public? If that's not the case then maybe all airports should be PPR.

This issue smells a lot like the Toronto City Centre's ban on jets...a lot of which are quieter than Mu-2 and Piaggio Avantis.

In the municipalities laws and by-laws. Every town and city in Canada can approve by-laws that prohibit some form of transportation. ie truck routes, parking, no-parking allowed and in this case like in Toronto they've applied aviation limits.
Aren't airports public?
The city is incorporated so they run it like one would a corporation. They get to decide who and what can use their airport

I'll 1 up ya....who are airport authorities accountable to? Safety and navigation of course are regulated. but what about the rest? Profitability? Finance? Competitive fairness(lol)?
It can be like dealing with an un-elected town council.

I'm with driving rain, Airports are business's, both private and public, some are in for making a profit and others are non profit. But, keep in mind, that politics plays a major role in the direction they take and how they take it.

One could always go to the city hall and apply for by-law changes. In the case of Toronto Island and maybe Edmontons case as well this lobbying can be expensive and still fail. Ask the CEO at Porter.
They simply don't want a viable airport within city limits.
