Whistler Airports (And Vicinity)

Hey guys,

Just doing research for airports in the Whistler area for the events coming up in 2010.

As far as I can tell the only airport phisically in Whistler is the lake for the floaters correct?

The closest airport is Pemberton? Which only has VFR?

If anyone has any other options please let me know.

This would be for Citations needing roughly 3800 feet to land.

That's it - any further away you might as well be landing in Pitt Meadows or the International.

Pemberton is long enough AFAIK - just not a dependable source of Jet fuel or any handling.

Jet fuel is sporadically available from Pemberton Helicopters, which is sporadically in operation...as of the latest I heard it was shut down.

I immagine the valley is rather tight for a citation, but I have seen kingairs and PC-12's in there so I don't see why it's not doable. Squamish is only 2400 feet and non-IFR, and the next closest is YVR.

Pemberton and Squamish will both be open for the Olympics but with restrictions. Aircraft arriving or departing will need to have special authorization plus have their passengers screened. The whole Sea to Sky corridor will under positive air traffic control probably from Vancouver Harbour.
Fuel will be available if needed but better make arrangements with one of the operators before hand as there are no FBO's at any of these airports. Winter maintenance has always been an issue but apparently part of the almost one billion dollar security cost will go toward snow removal. Glad to know we're getting something for our tax dollars.

I Hope this works out well for them ,I remember when we had to go through all this when the Olympics were in Greece. We were all going to have to move airplanes to out laying fields, and then no body came so we could stay where we landed. What a shock????????

Positive atc control what's that.....haven't heard of any new radar stations going in. Vancouver radar comes from victoria and harbor's radar control is from radio towers and has huge blind spots. Its all rumors and hear say right now regarding security and air space for 2010. Unless some one on here can point us to a public press release.........

I don't know anything about security at the olympics and what's going to be involved, however, there are ways to have radar coverage other than using ground-based radars.

I've seen biz jets in Pemberton a few times - In the summer. But during the winter you could easily wind up trapped for many days by weather.

I use to work out of Pemberton and we had a Global Express come in there as well as a Lear 35 from what I remember.
