150 HP Fleet Canuck..?

Post by HS-748 2A »

Does anybody know anything about this hotrod?
airliners.net calls it a 'replica'.
T.C.'s site AD search says it is O-320 E2D powered. Appears to be on Edo 2000s. Seems to have metal wings? Are they FL-80 wings just covered with tin? Flaps?
Interesting..

Do the wings seem short?

The wings are probably just metalized. Seen it on many Stinsons, Ercoupes, and really thats all a Maule wing is too. You just tack on light gauge tin over the structure.

I've also seen plenty of piss pots with 150hp added too. Taylorcrafts, Aeroncas, J3s and PA-11s. I heard of one T-Craft in YPK that supposedly has a 540 in it.

It's most likely this plane has been recertified as a homebuilt.

Im pretty sure the FL-80 does not have flaps, at least as from the factory, that is.

No, they never did.

I realize poeple hack up little piss pot airplanes all the time. I just like this one because it's a Fleet. I bet it made a pretty good airplane.

The world being as small as it is, I was just wondering if anybody had any first hand info on this bird; had flown it, knew which one it was made from or if it was built from scratch ect..

My guess is that someone put another aircraft type wing on it. Not just because of the flaps but it also looks like the fuel tank is gone from the nose (due to the larger engine?) and relocated to the wings (note the Cessna style step on the side of the fuselage just behind the firewall).

That's a good point Pratt.

I hadn't thought of the fuel.

The wing profile/ airfoil, other than the droop tip, looks original

The strutting is the same.

What little you can see of the aileron looks the same; corrugated aluminum.

Looks like a Super Cub nose cowl with some kit-bashed parts to fair it in behind. Wonder what he used for an engine mount since most other planes have later model parts available (ie J3-Super Cub, 7AC-Citabria).

The engine mount is probably a one-of fabbed up job. On the FL 80, it's 4 bolts attach it to the AF, at the firewall. Very simple mount. I wonder if he added a gusset or two on the AF to take the extra horses..?

There must be sombody out there who knows this dude or the airplane?

This plane is actually based where I work. I know that it is supposed to be a Canuck but the guy modified almost everything on it. I could manage to get more information and some more pictures of this one and another Canuck.

Right on OER - That's awsome. I knew there'd be sombody out there who might know something about it. Yeah, get some pics. Ask around. I really suspect it was a standard Canuck at one time. I'm curoius as to which one. If you get gabbing with the guy, and have a look at it up close. See if you can get a pic of the engine install. Interested in the wings too. What's the method there for the flaps and the tin work..

I'm bringing back an old topic, because I had more informations today about the bird:

I spoke with the men who build it and here are some of the mods:

- 165 hp engine
- bigger engine mount (homemade)
- fuel tanks in the wings
- "cessna" type controls instead of a stick
- "metallized" wings
- wings also longer then original (2')
- 3'6" flaps (each)
that's about it,
here are pictures I took two weeks ago of JQK and another canuck PNP at our new base in Lac-à-la-Tortue (CSU7).

Thanks OER, that's funny I was just thinking about that airplane today.

So PNP, what sort of engine is that? You say 165hp?

So have they been built up from original Canucks or are they built from scratch?

The two airplanes and the guys that built them are friends / associates I'm guessing?

Does JQK have a control wheel as well?

I'm thinking now they are CAP floats?

The mods I listed are for JQK. It's floats are 2200

As for PNP, I flew the bird last summer trying to give the guy a floatrating. It has a 150 hp lycoming engine. I don't know if it was made from an original canuck since it's written "super canuck" on it and the guy told that it's now a "Liberty". Probably the name, the guy who build it, gave to it for registration or something.
