Your Story
I have a few questions for everyone.
--> What made you want to be a pilot and/or have a career in aviation and why?
--> Which career(s) within aviation have you done and/or chosen to do and why (dispatcher, military, helicopter, commercial flights etc...)?
--> What's your story... what happened in your life that made aviation so much apart of your life?
I figure everyone has a story to tell and I would be interested to hear/read all of your stories.... if you don't mind sharing and if you don't want to share, that's okay too.
Feel free to share either the long version or short version of your story... whichever you are most comfortable sharing, completely up to you.
Also, feel free, if you are comfortable, to post a photo of yourself to go w/ your story so I can put a face to your story (only if your are comfortable doing so; again, completely up to you).
I'm looking forward to reading all of the stories posted.

Re: Your Story
I failed the railroad engineer aptitude test. They recommended pilot instead.

Pilots dissin' their own career, how typical
Would you guys feel more proud tossing somebody else's papers all day, every day?

Re: Your Story
You can raise this from dissing to interesting by relating your career.Pilots dissin' their own career, how typical![]()

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Your Story
As a child, my peers wanted to be fireman, or
policmen. But I knew what I wanted to be:
A PORN STAR!
Yes, as a small child, I knew that I wanted to
get paid for doing something I really, truly
enjoyed.
Unfortunately, as I grew older and larger, so
did my wang. To preposterous proportions.
To the point that all the skanks ran screaming
from the porn set, as soon as I uncoiled the
whitesnake.
So, my dreams of being a pornstar died. Thusly
I went with my second choice: pilot. There
was a bit of a snag that my doctor noticed
during my aircrew medical that I suffered from
a significant loss of blood pressure when I
attained an erection, because of the massive
quantity of blood that was required.
A restriction was placed on my medical -
NO ERECTIONS IN THE COCKpit
which I try to comply with. I cannot (legally)
join the "mile-high" club, but oh well.

Re: Your Story
It's unlikely you'll find many takers who will share their story with you RG3. By and large we're a lazy bunch who just don't want to go to the trouble of writing that much stuff down. Then you have your shy and reserved types who dislike tooting their own horn, and the rest probably just don't want to incriminate themselves. If you look there is more than enough colourful material on various indexes on this forum.

Re: Your Story
Just click on people's profile and see what you can piece together. (None of this is admissible in court right?)

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Your Story
The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.
The mouth is the anus of the mind.
Re: Your Story
ok, i'll bite. long afternoon til the 7pm flight.
my father's retirement job was to work out at a fishing lodge doing the things he loved to do. In order for me to go visit him, i would have to travel by beaver, 206, or like my very first flight, a big ol' loud otter... i went to visit as often as i could (trying to get as many trips out of it as i could) each summer until i graduated high school. my friends family also owned the operation, so essentially i got to spend alot of time around floats. when it was time to do something with myself, it seemed pretty natural that i would become a pilot.
after working on the ramp for a year or two, so i could finish the multi ifr, i was lucky enough to fly with some crusty old bastards on twin otters and naturally fell in love with fuel hauls, food palettes, and rebar! a year of that, a season of a 185 on floats (which i would do again in a heartbeat) led me to maldives for a busy season. Now it's a caravan in manitoba. Apparently i like the north and the bush, and the water. i like looking for moose and bears, and have found, i even get excited to watch the caribou migrate.
now i just have to convince the boss to buy me some floats for my plane and i'm set!

--> What made you want to be a pilot and/or have a career in aviation and why?
I wanted to be a race car driver, I was told that prolly wouldn't happen. Since my pops was a fly guy I figured it would be the next best thing. As such I've been around aircraft since before I can remember.
--> Which career(s) within aviation have you done and/or chosen to do and why (dispatcher, military, helicopter, commercial flights etc...)?
Dock Hand, Ramp Kid, Lumber Loader on Skis, Airport Manager
--> What's your story... what happened in your life that made aviation so much apart of your life?
Like I said, pops was a pilot so it just seemed to fit. I kicked around with the idea of flying for a living and in the end wound up on the ground/admin side of things. I still fly and love it!

Re: Your Story
Sigh, I’m disappointed by so many of you having such a poor and immature attitude about this thread. Perhaps it’s the girlie girl side of me for starting such a thread... I suspect I'm rather out numbered by how many men are on this site vs. us girls (are there even any other girls out there other than me and Widow???). I do hope at least some co-operate… it would be nice to get to know more of you a lot better and I thought that this would be a good way to do that… I am genuinely interested in your stories.

Rockie- Thank you.
Ifly4pie- Ty for the tip, but tried that already, most don’t have much of anything, if anything at all in their profiles.
Grover – I liked reading your story; just wonderful and the photos are super… I especially like the B&W and 4th one. Kind of a hot plane as far as planes go... (is it alright for a girl to say that?) What kind of plane? Love the goldfish picture w/ shark fin strapped on, gave me a laugh... I needed a laugh, thank you.
YoungPunk- Thank you. I’m glad you still get to fly. I haven’t flown in some time (years)… and I don't think I even remember any more (if you don't use it, you loose it) and like you, for at least the time being, I’ll be on the ground w/ regards to a career (flight dispatcher if all goes well)… unless course I’m given an opportunity to fly down the road and in which case I'll definitely switch gears to flying (my original career destination in life since very young).
**************************************************
I’m glad at least a couple of you decide to be co-operative…. I was hoping at least some of you would be civil. Thank you. Have a super day everyone!

None of us want to open up where our fellow males can see our emotions and passion regarding aviation. And yeah, we are an immature and crude lot. I'll PM you my story.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

RG3 isn't the only one who is curious about how everyone ended up where they are!

… Erring on the side of caution: if you send me any nonsense like some of the insecure idiots wrote above, I won’t finish reading it nor will I reply.
Though if you would like to PM me a descent and civilized story, that would be wonderful, thank you.
Looking forward to it.
grover Thank you for the support.
...Not all pilots are lazy. Just like any other career, some are good, honest, hardworking and upstanding fine men/women and well... then there are some who are NOT any of that and should be thrown back from where ever is they came from or deserve to go. Unfortunately, it is the bad weeds who often times make everyone else look bad. Personally, I have known several pilots in my life time who were/are (as the case may be) very hardworking and exceptionally upstanding men who set a fine example for their family and everyone else around them. The stereotype/excuse that pilots are lazy, doesn't wash w/ me. Being a pilot has nothing to do w/ someone choosing to be lazy (and it IS a choice); the type of man who is lazy and who chooses to not step up to the plate to be a good all around man is something that such a man would do so regardless of his career choice. Okay, I'm done venting.

Re: Your Story
Well back when I was a young wee lad, my Father was a CP mechanic with his own airplane, my Mother was a FA for AC, and my step-dad was a Pilot for AC. So suffice to say I was already interested in flying. Ever since I was 8 mo. old I have traveled at least 3 times per year (MUCH more now) and before 9/11 I would ALWAYS go up to the cockpit and see the pilots do their thing. When my mom met my step-dad he would take me on shorter flights with him (would not go overseas but if he had a turn around to YYC or YYZ for instance I would go with) and I would learn lots of neat stuff about flying the big iron. Anyhow, I got my pilot license before my driver license and from then on I was a pilot! Right now I am starting aeroabtics and hope to do so this summer compeitively.
I love warbirds - been up in harvards, yaks... Almost once got myself in a P-51D (My favourite airplane). Before I flew myself I would head to the airport and help the old guys wash their planes in exchange for a ride here and there. Now I hope to earn enough money to actually own a warbird for myself. This past summer I flew the L-19s towing for the Cadets which was alot of fun! That is a really nice airplane. Anyhow, long story short is ever since a was young I knew exactly what I wanted to be, and now I am finally realizing it.

the b&w pic was somewhere northwest of stony rapids, sk. for the life of me, i'm having a brain fart as to what camp it was.
oh, never mind. hoidas lake. great people, wicked food. the fourth picture is of a caravan. It's ok to like her - i tell her every day... I'm comfortable enough with my emotions to admit that. i'm pretty in love with the twin otter though.
What is your story?

I guess it was because that was what I wanted to be as far back as I can remember.I have a few questions for everyone.

Mechanic / pilot.--> Which career(s) within aviation have you done and/or chosen to do and why (dispatcher, military, helicopter, commercial flights etc...)?
Civilian commercial both fixed wing and helicopters.
-->
Once I got started it just became a way of life, for over fifty years. What's your story... what happened in your life that made aviation so much apart of your life?
I don't have time right now to write much but may later if this tread starts to go the way you want it to.I figure everyone has a story to tell and I would be interested to hear/read all of your stories.... if you don't mind sharing and if you don't want to share, that's okay too.

Here is the only picture I have at the moment, it was taken at one of the last airshows I flew in just before I retired three years ago.

ZBBYLW Great story, thank you. I'm so glad you are getting to realise your childhood dream... not all childhood dreams come true (mine hasn't), but I'm happy yours is. BTW... aeroabtics... wow... I haven't known anyone to date who has been into that side of things, very interesting. Here's to you staying safe while you follow your dream. Good luck.
grover I have been sheltered for ages... what does "Wicked food" mean? Good or bad?
I plan to share my story, just need to type it up... no worries, I'll share.
Cat Driver Great picture; nice plane. Hope you find time later to write more. I find it interesting that you fly both helicopters and fixed wings... isn't it difficult to maintain your flight hours on both?

Re: Your Story
Not in the least, when I first added helicopters to my license I flew both airplanes and helicopters as needed every day quite often switching from one to the other twice during a given day as I flew traffic patrol for CKLW radio in Detroit with the helicopter every morning and evening, in between I flew what ever airplane we had a trip for.Cat Driver Great picture; nice plane.
