First float job in the GTA
Anyone know if there are any float operators in southern ontario that hire low-time guys?
Last summer I've seen a few floatplanes landing at Toronto Island's Airport - and I was wondering if anyone had any info on some of these companies?

Theres only cameron air out of the toronto island. The rest of the operations are all quite north of the GTA. I doubt any that are within an hour or twos drive will hire freshly licenced pilots. Go north young man

he's assuming you are trolling for suckers, and you are either really new or real naive...wonger wrote:What do you mean by "nice troll?". Tool.
p.s. if you are new, you might not want to call people "tools", said person may very likely be your boss someday.

Dude.........chill out.p.s. if you are new, you might not want to call people "tools", said person may very likely be your boss someday.
I know when I first joined this site I was naive and was asking similar questions. Not every post is a troll.
In regards to the original post. Rowdy is correct. Cameron out of YTZ have an amphib 206 and a Caravan. There's also Georgian Bay Airways out of Parry Sound that operate a couple 180's and a Bush Hawk. Both have hired low timers. There might also be an operator out of Rice lake but I'm not quite sure. There might even be some work in Muskoka but that's not exactly in the GTA. That's all I can think of for now. Rowdy's right. Heaps of operators up in Northern Ontario.
Good Luck

First off - "TOOL" was in reference to being called a "mamas boy" on my initial inquiry - so it's in my right to form an opinion based on North Shlepp's comments. And not everyone is willing to sacrifice his/her soul for their "first job" on floats, because there are many other options in career paths to pursue in aviation. New or naive - so be it. This is a forum, and, I'm searching for people who have constructive advice to give about the industry.
As for av8tor - Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Re: First float job in the GTA
wonger, if you don't want to go north and make some sacrifices that way, you're limited to instructing, dumping meat bombs and if you get really lucky, maybe an FO spot on a navajo or whatever else. Good luck to you

Sheesh, wonger, so touchy. I made the not unreasonable conclusion that you were a troll, and so Mamas boy was based on that...I'll take it that you are for real, though. Look around at your fight school; how many others are like it in the GTA? Southern Ontario? How many of those students want to get a flying job? What do you think the competition is like to get low-time jobs in the GTA? How about last year's graduates, or the year before that, who really want to see their friends and family again, and now have experience to offer a potential employer? "Selling your soul?" Look up 'supply and demand' in an economics textbook and see how it applies to your situation, and the wages you might expect close to home. Then, pack your bags, and do the road trip to all of those places that start with 'Fort' and end with 'Lake' that no-one else wants to go to. Somewhere along the way, someone will hire you. You'll meet great people (Meatservo, Wallypilot and Medby are three that I've met along the way..), see really cool stuff, have a photo album filled with memories, and get some great experience. Then you go back to the GTA, and get the job with Cameron Air, and laugh at all of the 9 to 5 ers rushing to their office jobs..
Good Luck!

Re: First float job in the GTA
There have been more than a couple of successful careers started in the GTA but an unwillingness to relocate is a huge stumbling block. Good luck.
Re: First float job in the GTA
Try Lakeland in Temagami. Not the GTA, but only an hour north of North Bay.
Re: First float job in the GTA
Not trying to give you a hard time, but if you think leaving the southern Ontario is "sacrificing your soul" (just a tad over-dramatic wouldn't ya say?)....it just shows that you really need to leave and see some of the rest of country. You'd be surprised at how great some of these northern towns are if you have a more open mind than you seem to.wonger wrote: And not everyone is willing to sacrifice his/her soul for their "first job" on floats, because there are many other options in career paths to pursue in aviation.
If you really want to fly floats you WILL have to leave southern Ontario; your chances of starting out flying floats there are probably as close to 0% as you can get. Just looking at a map of the south vs. a map of the north should make that obvious to you. You'll have to sacrifice one way or another, float flying or location. Sounds like you better plan on an instructor rating, and develop a taste for KD.
On a side note, don't take this site so seriously. There is some good info on here, but you have to sift through a metric ton of BS to find it. And there's plenty of idiots waiting to jump all over you for any given reason, but I don't think North Shore is one of those. Just sometimes when an inexperienced guy asks a question that seems so obviously simple to someone experienced and familiar with the industry that we forget that we were once naive too and assume it's someone trying to stir the pot.
Re: First float job in the GTA
Thanks for the info, and Slatts - you're right, after MUCH sifting, I'm able to find some pretty useful info about the industry and what I could expect as a low timer.
True, moving out of the GTA isn't a sacrifice, in fact, it would be beneficial to anyone willing to venture out of the "centre of the universe" (toronto). Unfortunately for myself, I've begun my aviation career far too late of a stage in my life, where it wouldn't be possible at this moment to abandon ship here in the city (house, kids, blah blah). I like floats a lot, but seeing as there isn't much option around here when it comes to operators, it looks like I'll have to forget about that dream for quite a while. Besides, after plenty of inquiries, I'm not so sure even Cameron Air would be a wise choice for an employer.
Either way - thanks
