Epic Taxi

Post by SuperchargedRS »

What is the longest any of you guys have putted around on floats?

A week or so ago I found my self trying to get back home (delta airspace), I had been spending the day enjoying more or less good vis well up until I wanted to ramp the plane for the night.

I start inland, vis goes down to about 1 mile, I still have good orientation and I'm still legal, I get a little closer to home make my call and sure enough they are not going to let me enter their Delta. I start thinking where else should I moor the plane for the night, well I dont have time to fly her back in the morning so I land just out of their delta and taxi in (probably 6 miles of taxing, under bridges, around bends etc.) I logged about 1.5 doing this lol, I was able to step taxi only for so long w/ the no wake zones... loggin time I guess.

So what is the longest you guys have done the slow boat to china thing?

I think any of the minnow hunters in supercubs and what not spend a long time taxiin. I once taxied 3 miles down the lake because of localized weather causing some poor vis.

I flew off northern Superior one year. South wind = fog. Took 2 days trying to get in from 5 miles away. Finally found a hole big enough to land in, then creeped back to base. I can't remember how long it took, but it made the front page of the Thunder Bay blabber. (Just happened to be a reporter at the base that day, plus I guess they nothing else to write about )

The 3 mile taxi was in a beaver and Not while minnow hunting. Guess I should have clarified that.

There was a float plane sank or ran into big trouble near toronto island (now called city centre airport) once. Turned out the lad had taxied it from HAMILTON harbour!! to toronto because the plane was not airworthy.
sound like fun? it was a rather rough day if i recall correctly.

I was flying to a fish camp on the taku once and had to land about six miles upstream right by the DFO camp because the cloud/fog went right down to the river. I taxied within sight the DFO camp to see if I could see a friend of mine that was working there so he could bring me down river in a boat. Nobody came out so I started downstream. I just measured it on google earth, looks like a taxied just under five miles before the fog lifted enough for me to take off and fly the last mile or so. The current helped a lot so I think I was only taxiing for around a half an hour. Still though, float planes make lousy boats.

Pat Magie of Island Seaplanes Hawaii, who used to own our Beech 18, C-GGGF,when it was N1042H, once was ferrying from Clear lake California to Fairbanks AK in spring, and had an engine tank, he landed on Williston Lake and taxied 16 hours on one engine with his 16 YO son, to get to.............and changed an engine beside an ice-flo,............then completed the trip. Will locate and post his personal account of the noteable trip sometime for interssting reading. He also noted he slept in the Beech for something like 16 summers with his wife, while tourists slept in tents on shore, during his air tour years......................I can't imagine my wife putting up with that but its all part of history of the north and guys like Pat who have been there and done it.

He freightered the plane to Singapore, launched it over the side of a ship, and flew toThailand where they filmed "The Phantom" with Catherine Zeta Jones. The plane returned to Honolulu and also starred in the film "Godzilla" with Pat at the controls....

30-40,000 hours later Pat retired.

He still flys though......at his retirement job, Island Seaplanes located in Koneohe Bay, Honolulu. Hence the "Koneohe Beech" insignia on the cowl of our plane.

If the plane could only talk.....

Cheers
