Class 1 Medical

Post by metal »

Hey all, have a quick question about the cat 1 medical. I currently only have a cat 3 that was issued in August 2008. I haven't gotten an audiogram and ECG yet, and will hopefully be finishing my CPL by the end of the year, so I'd probably go in for that medical near my checkride.

Now my question is this. Is it possible to go get an ECG and audiogram done say, this week, and hold onto the results, and pass them onto my doctor when I go in to get the cat 1 later in the year? Do I need to actually go get another full physical to get the cat 1, or can I just submit the ECG and audiogram, and have them "update" it to a class 1, for the following year?

Thanks in advance.

Firts of all, why would you do all your training just to discover that you may have a problem obtaining the Cat 1? Invest all the money for nothing?

Secondly, it is my belief that you can not do it your way because the medical refers to the examination date. Also the CAR describes the validity of the medical from the examination date, not from the issued date.

Just have it done, it is quite simple, in my case it was not a full medical, but just a renewal of cat 3 plus the audiogram in the booth (3-4 min) and the ECG about 30 sec.

my 2 cents

I guess I should have mentioned that I have my private right now, and thats all; haven't started any other training yet.

Thanks for the info though, I'll probably go get it done soon!

Unless you are in an integrated program, you have to write TC CPL exam before you complete the flight test, and correct the exam to 100% with your instructor. The rules regarding the Cat1 medical say that you must have a CAT1 medical before writing TC, so, regardless, unless you are in an integrated program, you will have the CAT1 for the written and you should, therefore have it for the flight test :D

Anybody who's intentions are to fly commercially should get their CAT 1 from the day that they start their PPL. That way you know that you qualify.

Not that the CAT 1 medical really shows you anything; you can be morbidly obese and pass that test.

what sorts of test do they run during the cat 1? I over heard some students at the seneca orientation the other day saying they check your teeth and flexability. Not sure how true that is. Can someone elaborate on this please.

Each doc is different. As far as flexibility goes, they get you to bend to reach your toes, sideways and like that. As far as teeth, well it's no Air Force exam but the condition of your teeth can easily determine your digestion which indicates certain other facts too :)

I've had neither of the two for mine cat1's so far. Just looked at the EGT and hearing tests, piss-test as per usual, everything else seemed pretty much like the cat3.
