I feel for our cargo and ramp guys when it goes -36 with 36 knots of wind and a windchill of -56 or so. They don't get paid enough!

Cheers,

Cambridge Bay had a chill factor this morning of -63.

You woossies from Southern Canada go into conniptions once it gets below -25, FFS. In Yellowknife (and even worse further north!) we spend weeks in succession between -36 and 43. Mercifully the wind doesn't blow much in those conditions so we only have ice fog to contend with. But in YRB, YPC, YSY, YEV, YCO and numerous other places on the Arctic coast, they have the joy of those temps PLUS 10-25 kt winds all day...

When it hits -40 in YEG, it's almost front page news. Good God.

Why would a Canadian airline with a Canadian airplane not be able to operate in Canadian weather?

If the visibility is zero in fog and there are clouds of vertical development with tops to say twenty five thousand feet would that not be towering fog?

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Wellllll.....

Visibility is based on what you see/measure on the ground. Not sure anybody can see/measure a 25K top in 1/2 mile vis?

Sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry...a METAR is based on what the observer sees. The tops would be a PIREP.

O.K. Sis you are indeed correct with that statement...so lets try this again from another approach.

If I were to have departed your airport and wishing desperately to get my attention with the possibility of quiet enjoyable evening and maybe a sleep over you asked me for a pirep on the departure to advise you of the tops and the Vis was reported as zero in fog.

When I finally called you back and reported moderate to heavy turbulence during the climb with solid IMC to 25,000 feet, would you not consider that towering fog? :smt045
