JUMPSEAT Flight Crew Development // FINAL SESSION // YWG

Jumpseat Session VI: Command Responsibility
Tuesday, 24 March, 2009
Western Canada Aviation Museum

I’m proud the present the 6th and final session of the Jumpseat Flight Crew Development Series, ‘Command Responsibility'. It’s the concept that when things are going well, everyone gets the credit…and when things hit the fan, the buck stops with you.

This concept received a great deal of exposure when an air taxi aircraft ran out of fuel and came down on a Winnipeg city street in June 2002; the pilot in command going to charged with criminal negligence for his actions. Read the judgment here.

Mr. Joseph Barnsley is a Director with the Manitoba Aviation Council, and practices business law in the transportation sector. He will provide some background into the court’s decision on Mr. Tayfel, and will explore the issue of liability to flight crews.

LCol Gary Hook (ret’d) has been directly involved in aviation safety for over 27 years, including more than 9 years as a Canadian Forces fighter pilot. An instructor and facilitator with extensive international experience with both civilian and military organizations, he will address the keynote message of the Jumpseat series: the professional responsibility that crewmembers accept when they start the engines.

I would also like to use this opportunity to thank all who have taken advantage of the Jumpseat project for your participation, and the sponsor group for their support and encouragement. This has been encouraging and exciting example of local organizations and leaders supporting the local aviation community, and the opportunity for entry-level crew members to participate in such high quality lectures, at no personal cost.

Fly Well. Fly Safe. Fly Often.
