Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
DH8 out of YYZ is about 2:00 (RIC) for the longest leg. BDL is pretty long too. Newspapers? We never read newspapers in the flight deck. We do, however, occasionally have to read 'memos' enroute...

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
I think you will find most airlines have a similar policy with reading materials on the flight deck. Its one of those rules that 99% of the crews ignore, but yes there are a few sky gods who dont allow it. Personally, I think staring out the window or sitting motionless is more hazardous than doing a crossword or suduku. At least you're exercising the brain a bit.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
I would have to agree. When I am in cruise and I just stare at the instruments, my brain isn't really registering anything. If i'm reading or doing a crossword, I look up and do periodic scans that are much more thorough.
What is the longest leg in the RJ?

One of the longest is probably Houston to Calgary... with dodging CBs and a strong wind, I logged 4.6 hours on that leg once. Full load of fuel 19,000+ lbs. Thankfully first class wasn't full, so there were some meals left over for us.

On the Dash, YUL has YUL-YYG as well as YUL -YGR in the past. It can be from 2:00 to 2:30 depending on the winds.
My longest on the Dash was YWG-YUL (ferry flight). 4.1 hours
A Dash 300 with a wicked tailwind and it was planned LRC. WX was good oin YUL so we had YHU as an alt.

Must have had ground delays cuz it's only a 1500 nm trip (under 3.5 hours) or you got lostmoreccsplease wrote:One of the longest is probably Houston to Calgary... with dodging CBs and a strong wind, I logged 4.6 hours on that leg once. If my memory serves me correctly, that airplane won't stay in the air that long (with legal IFR reserves), but I could be wrong. Its been a while.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Slight delay in IAH, nothing big.
With 19,500 lbs of fuel, you have decent legs.

Do you think the company pays you to sit up front and read the newspaper?
Do you think that the paying passengers in the back might expect a little more professionalism
from you?
We have stalled 5 airplanes already by having pilots in the cockpit that think as you do.
Stop whining, suck it up and do the job you were hired to do.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Honestly QFE, what are you supposed to do for 3 hours of straight and level flight with an autopilot on. Have conversation with a guy that you have been flying with for 2 or 3 days already. Maybe if you guys have enough to talk about. Usually when things go silent, a good Maxim, Mens Health, or Esquire fits in nice. The Globe or the Post is fine as well, especially when your thinking about making some stock market purchases. Even though your starring at gauges it doesn't mean you are actually doing anything or seeing anything. Last week I watched someone stare at the dashboard for 10 minutes before he realized that he didn't engage the Nav Mode. Guess what, I didn't have any reading material out at the time either. I guess you really can stay fully engaged in the task at hand unless the task is engaging, hmmmmm......
Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Maybe you come from an era where the workload used to be a lot higher than it is now. Modern jets are so automated that we as pilots during cruise are more system monitors than pilots. Aside from scanning the myriad of gauges in the cockpit, doing a fuel and RVSM check and keeping a good watch on things, what do you expect? I think most competent individuals can handle a crossword puzzle and keeping the blue side up!QFE wrote:Inverted2 & duckfoot

PS. The company doesn't pay me very much to fly the plane and read the newspaper!

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
The airlines I am familiar with do not allow newspapers in the cockpit.
The people who have decided this are more expert in the field than I am and even possibly more than you.
There is a good presentation in the new ground school on this subject by the head of iSMS.
I suggest you could argue the point with him.
The attitude of some remind me of Homer at work in the nuclear plant.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
aaand one would also argue that boredom breeds fatigue and fatigue breeds mistakes and mistakes cause accidents. Far more accidents than can be attributed to reading unauthorized material in the flight deck.

So i'm a sky god if i chose to adhere to the SOP's unless i consider it unsafe to do so? What is this, cafeteria SOP following? Perhaps your tune will change the first time you're hauled in for an interview with your CP following an incident where you used your Capatin's Authority which negatively impacted the integrity of the schedule. However, this likely won't happen to you for awhile as I assume that your an ACJ FO. While the sky god is explaining his/her reasoning to the CP, you will likely be at starbucks reading the newspaper, totally oblivious to the consequences.Inverted2 wrote:Its one of those rules that 99% of the crews ignore, but yes there are a few sky gods who dont allow it.

I can't believe there is an argument going on about this. Quite entertaining

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
What's the chance of a new hire going straight to the RJ out of ground school?
Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
Zero, people were bumped off and have reinstatement rights.
Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
When do you think the backlog will be cleared by (assuming the AC contract is renewed in 2020 and there is minimal or no growth)?
Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
If you want to fly a jet, don't go to Jazz. The RJ fleet could be reduced further and there are a lot of Dash pilots that would prefer to be on the RJ. If you're really looking for a spot on a jet, you might consider Georgian or Sky Regional.
Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
I realize that, but I kind of see Jazz as a long-term thing. I have qualms about flying long-term at Sky, and lets not bring up GGN.

Re: Air Canada jazz pilots hours
If you're only interested in flying a jet, you're being severely narrow-minded. I fly the Dash and have a much better quality of life than people with the same seniority on the Q or RJ. I got a week of vacation each month from May through August, can hold Christmas and New Years off and get most of the flying I ask for and I've only been here 2.5 years. Compare that to people in my groundschool on the Q in YYZ are just hovering around the reserve area and will definitely be working every holiday. The RJ is even worse.
I could hold the Q if I wanted, or the RJ out west, but I choose to fly the Dash. If I could stay on the Dash the rest of my career, I would. Don't let jets become the be all and end all of your career aspirations.
