Step right up ladies and germs.
Place your bets on when the first flight will be IN or OUT of Howey Bay this year. And feel free to predict who you think will be the first operator IN OR OUT of the bay; Chimo? Viking? Greens? CFF? Someone sitting at Red Lake Seaplane?
To find out who won, myself or someone else (possible the pilot of the first flight) will make a post in this thread.
The winner
gets bragging rights, and gets to say I told you so and pretend like they understand the science of predicting ice break up!!! And possibly free beers at a local party this summer.
Thank you! (
Yes I have way too much time on my hands today
)

My bet is for May 14th. Hopefully Chimo's Norseman coming in.
Last year break up was super late and they were flying out of another lake till almost June.

I'll wager the 7th of May- I think it's gonna be like '07 this year... at least that's my guess based on how spring has more or less sprung around SOnt already. Boy was last year ever brutal though!
First guys in/ out? I'll say Green's, they've got a fresh crew that I bet will be raring to go.
I'll miss it up there, the past few seasons have been a real good time, but it's off to BC for me.

May 23 after lunch... I have no knowledge to predict such events or operator. I guess I'll go with Green's.

You've got to give me a call when you're not insanely busy some time and let me in on the scoop with BC!

I don't know about ice out this year but I'm betting the first flight out of the bay will be Chimo's C180.
Thanks in large part to Red Lake Seaplane's wood/fiberglass float skidders, the first flight from the bay last year was on May 9th at 1030.
Skidders bound to the underside of the floats, ready for launch.
In the drink before applying power and sliding up onto the ice.
Untying the ropes binding the skidders to the floats.

Damn -- doesn't this bring back memories -- earliest I was ever back in Red on Floats was April 20th but I don't think we were on Howey Bay that year much before the 1st -- but it was very early -- how time flies -- I first stepped on to the OCA dock and lost my cherry 41 years ago -- but hey -- I'm still chasing pussy and driving airplanes -- in that order

Ha! Those skids were hilarious! How far do you figure they slid by the time they stopped?
