DHC-2 Beaver.
Ranger Oil used to keep a beautiful shiny red and white Beaver on wheel-floats in the hangar at McCall Field in Calgary, alongside their Lear 25 and G11, abou thirty years ago. Any-one know what happened to it?

If it's the same a/c I'm thinking of it was a real cream puff! I'm remembering a white plush interior or something amazing like that! I've got some really vague memories of seeing it on Schwatka Lake (just outside of Whitehorse) sometime in the early '90s but I don't recall any more details. I do believe if it wasn't based there, that it was a regular visitor though.
Perhaps someone in the YXY area would recall more.

That's the one! My memory was correct, but I see musicman got you all the details. Good deal!

Prairie Chicken, JRO was not a bad airplane but was no cream-puff, in the '90s anyhow. It's a pretty nice airplane now though, post rebuild. (due to a mishap in '01)
JRO, also was not transient, but rathter resident, if you will..
I'm wondering you were thinking of this airplane - It fits the bill.
Non-resident and totally mint with a 'white, plush' interior:

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
Could have been. I don't recall red & white ... I just recall an interior that was absolutely anything but typical workhorse Beaver. And the reference to Ranger Oil struck a cord.

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
I believe, and this is third hand information from memory, that JRO was owned by Ranger Oil back in the day. At some point it was purchased by a fellow in Whitehorse who stated a charter company and named it Ranger Air, maybe to save on stencils and paint. The plane was wrecked up at Wrist Pin lake and during the rebuild the alaska door mod was added, as was the new paint. It's still in operation.

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
It was owned by Ranger Oil and then Tincup lodge - Larry Nagy, and then Ron Newsome, who still owns it and calls his charter service 'Ranger Air'.ragbagflyer wrote:I believe, and this is third hand information from memory, that JRO was owned by Ranger Oil back in the day. When operated by Tin Cup, the airplane always said "Ranger Air" on it. That was probably the O.C. component of the lodge and teh name carried over when Ron bought it.
It was wrecked South of Ross River in 2001. I think its spelled 'Rispin' Lake though.
I was involved in the salvage.

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
Heard that Ronnie had it under insured. After Craig crashed it it was rebuilt without the Baron wing. If you look at it in its red colors you will note the Baron wing and then in blue she is sporting a regular wing.
Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
I don't think the airplane was under insured particularilly but I think there was a non-kit-ed set of wings available in YVR that he managed to snag that were ready to go, vs reparing his own.
The benefit out of the MK I Baron wing is neglegible anyhow; The MK II is another story however.
JRO is certainly a nice airplane now though. I think Ron sunk another 30K into the big door and a brand new set of floats too. He really does take good care of his stuff.
Interestingly, JRO picked up about 5kts in cruise post accident rebuild.

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
My old man flew JRO back when it belonged to Ranger Oil.. he said it was a great ship back then, and has fond memories of it. Glad to see its well taken care of.
Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
There was a Beaver on wheels in YYC back in the 90's that used to fly out to Turner Valley to pick someone up that had a strip out there. Is this the same machine?
As for the under insured Beaver in Whitehorse, I know of one that was lost or at least seriously damaged in a hangar fire that was insured for the price he paid for it: $100,000. At the time, the plane was worth $300-400,000.

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
Interesting thread. I taught Larry Nagy to fly, in his Christian(Aviat) Husky while it was on wheels. He later traded the Husky for a Helio 295 which I got to fly. He bought JRO to service Tin Cup Lodge but then sold it to get away from liability should there ever be a claim. All three of his aircraft were float equipped and I believe Pappy taught Larry to fly floats out of Fort Langley

Re: DHC-2 Beaver.
That's JPX. It doesn't say in the history Neil has there, but Wheeler operated JPX from about 1966 to 1970. It was based in Goose for the most part, and was the only Beaver I ever saw with a windshield wiper.
HS, is he still accepting entries? I sent him some stuff last fall and he never published the pics nor did he reply to the e-mail.That's Neil Aird's site. I'm a fairly regular contributer there.
