Re: Mil or Non Mil
I'd like to fly for a Canadian Major someday. I'd particularly enjoy long hauls. If Westjet ever expanded internationally I'd fly with them.
In response to mcrit. I'm not a tank, but I would be willing to do that stuff, as long as it doesn't happen too often.
In regards to the enslavement comment. I just don't want to get washed out of flying, and into something I hate and be forced to do it.
About the helis, my biggest fear is that my time wont be counted for airlines, or I'll end up in a SeaKing.

Air Canada only requires 1000 hours fixed wing, and military experience is a plus in their books.shinysuitman wrote:I'd like to fly for a Canadian Major someday. I'd particularly enjoy long hauls. If Westjet ever expanded internationally I'd fly with them.

You have some odd fears - either of those fates would be pretty minor setbacks (if flying a SeaKing could be considered one, since this would qualify you for some pretty high end Helicopter type jobs, many of which pay better than AC)About the helis, my biggest fear is that my time wont be counted for airlines, or I'll end up in a SeaKing.
Consider that being a pilot in the Canadian Armed Forces will mean probably not always getting to do what you would like or which would further your airline career. Go there because you want to be a serviceman first and a pilot second. Otherwise you won't make the selection process. They catch wind that you're going to be gone when your term is up, or as soon as you feel its hurting your airline dream you'll lose to someone who does want to serve the forces in all its capacity. This might mean doing time (even as a pilot) at HQ on the administration side of things or working in one of the recruitment centers amongst other things. It should be said as well that getting into the armed forces in this capacity is been at its best in years, but they're aiming to keep people now that they're getting some better funding - as opposed to the low years when the Liberals reigned and there were cutbacks galore.
We can't stop here! This is BAT country!

Going to be very frank, no offense meant to any of our civilian counterparts!
I don't think you are the military type, if you can't look at yourself as a warrior first and pilot second, dont join! Sea Kings drop torpedo's on things, so do auroa's. Hercs have guys with guns jumping out the back to kill people. Tac Hel have door gunners. We may not ever do that in our career for real, just like a cop may never pull his gun in the line of duty, but who knows what is going to happen in the world over the next 20 years. You might, you might not, but if your not willing to be the warrior type, those of us who are don't want you. You will put us in danger when/if it ever comes to doing the job for real. I don't say that to be mean, go have a great civilian career. Feel good about it, knowing you did what was right for you. Listen to Hedley's advice, in your case, it would be very relevant.
Of note... Pilots also do ground jobs... including being forward air controlers, on the ground with the army calling in air strikes. Are you ready to do that. If you can't answer yes... You probably know the route you should go.
I wish you all the best in your aviation career!

Can't say it much better than that. If you view the infantry as enslavement, you'll inevitably be posted to a tac hel squadron (if you made it through training). There the peaceful and docile young men will educate you on the finer points of the warrior spirit.
You will finish your time there better for it and have much better stories to share while in LNAV at 370.

Excuses are like asses, everyone has one, and no one wants to hear yours.
