Porter/pearson rumor

Post by fruz »

Hey,

Just curious if anyone has heard anything about Porter applying for gates at Pearson. Heard this rumor the other day and wanted to see if there was any truth or substance to the rumor...

When Porter has to divert to YYZ for any reason, they end up in Landmarks' crappy terminal by the back fence.

As they grow, it would only make sense that they secure a gate or two for these occasions and, who knows, maybe use them in the future on a regular basis.

Perhaps their aggressive growth plans cannot be fully accommodated at YTZ. Will going outside their niche hinder them or will it be a blessing? We all laughed when Westjet moved from YHM to YYZ, and look at them now.

Porter is currently building a new terminal which would accommodate all the new aircraft coming in. Deluce mentioned that the new apron would be able to handle 25-30 Q400's. People often forget that Porter is based on convenience and that moving to YYZ is out of the question for them. I quote one of their marketing staff when I say "Porter will never move to Pearson; it is completely against what we stand for."

However the diversion reason would be feasible.

We shall see. This YYZ rumour is coming from a few different angles, so I think there is some merit to it. Then again, Jetblue and others have also been strongly rumoured into YYZ for many years now. I also wouldn't put too much weight on what a marketing staff member has to say.

From what I see Porter is doing just great where they are. LBPIA isn't the be all end all center of the universe that everyone thinks it is. Its has the most expensive landing fees in the world, and you get nothing for it. Oh unless you count the shitty new terminal, the roads work that someone on drugs must have designed to get to it, a CAT III system that is never used because they can't figure how to put it on in less than 2 hours, among a long list of other things. For certain airlines, ex. AC & WJ, this works, they don't mind the downsides and the expense. But for Porter what would be the point.

At least thats my 2 Cents, and how i see it.

People complain and get pissed off. It happens quite often actually. From what I have read TCCA is having trouble "taming" Porter on this problem.

@1331, even with the CAT3 system in place, Porter's aircraft can only do CAT2's.

Deluce would be out of his mind to go head to head in yyz. He has a nice little monopoly right where he is so why risk getting his ass kicked by real competition?

yes they'll be in Pearson soon, once Air Canada break the Jazz contract under CCAA to the cheapest bidder, Porter will have most of it's fleet on Air Canada routes and Jazz will park all of the turboprops, Air Lab and PAL will run the east CMA the west... service air, swissport and aeromag are looking at new contract across the country for Air Canada too.... :smt040

Might be some truth to it.I think when Porter started they had mentioned some smaller places like YSB,YAM,YTS etc that they would eventually like to fly to.I can see some good loads to Pearson from these cities but wonder if there would be much traffic to the island. All that said it would be up to there marketing dept. I hope they do as it would be nice to have a choice instead of Jizz.

you got that right Stan! And the funny part is everybody thinks AC is a ripoff and WS is great value! This leads to another question though - Porter has been able to sell tickets without resorting to ridiculous seat sales and often being the most expensive option. If they start flying from YYZ, will they continue to be able to command premium pricing or will a price war ensue?

Just look at any market where AC is and WJ isn't, and you'll see why people feel that way.

Not a rip off, just charging what the fare should really be.

Right.........how much did AC make last year vs WS. if WS is making money charging lower fares maybe AC should review their busness plan

I think that if you stick to the dotted lines when making the folds your might have some aviation success.

I guess that's why I'm glad we live in a free market. The market will decide what a fare should be.

Jastapilot, are you talking about the free market where every company is allowed to operate, or the free market where a certain teal colored airline has exclusion deals with the airport operator to maintain their exclusivity?
