Care to expand on it ? Do you believe in first and second class citizens? WTF ?
Please take it in context. CNN was drumming up the fact that he was born or lived in Turkey (with the usual Islamo-fanatical propaganda) and someone commented that only CNN could make such a dumb connection with someone who is a Canadian citizen. I merely pointed out that he was a naturalized citizen who did hold citizenship in another country at one point.
Mr/Mrs Pie-pilot, I sure hope that it was CNN's naturalized comment and you are above that kind of crap. Aren't you... right?

Looks like he wanted to be shot down.
"He made a statement that he was trying to commit suicide and he didn't have the courage to do it himself," Trooper Justin Watson said on ABC. "And his idea was to fly the aircraft into the United States, where he would be shot down."
That's what I figured. This really saddens me to think about... someone in that much pain and suffering that they would go to such great lengths to take their own life.
Bushav8er wrote:That'd work Cat. Being a flight college one would think they'd have a better plan then just leaving the keys in the a/c. Shouldn't the instructors have them and solo students sign them out other times?
I can't say for sure, but I don't think the keys were left in the planes when I was there at the old hangar. But still, these people are students of the college... they've obviously maintained a level of trust. Besides, how could you possibly plan for something like this... you don't really, because you would never think it would happen. I'm sure it's never crossed the minds of the staff/management at the college. A flying club may be a little different because the student/teacher relationship is not as close as what it is at the college. It's just really shocking.

No. I said that he was a naturalized citizen. Maybe you don't understand.
Naturalization is the acquisition of citizenship or nationality by somebody who was not a citizen or national of that country when he or she was born.
So let's break this down. Was this person born in Canada? No. So he had citizenship of another country at one point in time.

So he decides to move to Canada and become Canadian. Great. So he does and becomes a naturalized Canadian citizen (see definition above).

So why did I bring this up?

CNN wanted to make a big deal about this person's country of origin, which happens to be Turkey (where coincidentally, there was an attempted assassination on Obama during the same time). CNN was using this person's Turkish name rather than the Canadian name he is known by.

And Obama had an assassination attempt on him... see the misc. forum. I posted the link.

obviously a 31 year old canadian citizen
flying a 172 down the mid-u.s. lol
This is what I responded to. The context had me believe that he had lived in Canada his entire life, so I responded.
No, he is a naturalized citizen
So that CNN might be justified, in their wacky fear-mongering way of thinking that this guy could be a terror threat.

I hate CNN and I personally couldn't care less about his country of origin.

joco, end it... I wasn't going to say anything because it didn't concern me, but it sounds to me like you're trying to put words in iflyforpie's mouth... stirring the pot you might say. He's not profiling as seems you are suggesting. He's simply stating facts about the shit stirring the media is trying to do.

On with the thread.

Wow, kinda scary that so many of us Canadians share the perception that if we stroll into the US unannounced, their mounting level of fear (disguised as an increase in the level of national security) would lead them to shoot us down.

very sad. Alot of people go through hardships, this cant be justified. Perhaps he wanted to end his life but did he give it a thought as to how the person taking his life will feel (fighter pilot). I'm glad that the U.S. military showed restraint and that this ended peacefully. I can tell you his career is over, and it was a stupid way to go.

This incident will paint a negative light on GA again - just what we don't need right now. I hope all FTU's and aircraft owners use a little more common sense about security - take steps to secure and keep an eye out for suspicious activity. It only takes a yahoo like this to wreck it for everybody else - I don't care how f#$%n' depressed you are, don't use a friggin' airplane to carry out your dirty work - I just want to scream then smack that idiot!!!

Now, if we'd just stop posting about it, and the media would just STFU, other MORONS would not hear about it. But no, that's just not the way we do things.
Same goes for school shootings. Makes the creep a household name. Proof? We all know who Mark Lapin was. Name ONE of his victims. One.
Same thing here.
How to handle it? Drop the subject. Let it go. There's nothing to be seen here.
Maybe Lindsay Lohan will get caught giving BJ's under a bridge. Then this Cessna thing will be forgotten.
You think the scum bags at Columbine High came up with the idea on their own??? Do you? No. They did it because some scum had done it before them.
So, let it go.

My guess is that the U.S. government will be holding that aircraft until they are done with their investigation.

if he kept it together, finished his licenses he'd probably be back in Turkey flying an A320 or 737NG in no time. What a way to piss away a career opportunity

Pilot charged after plane leads U.S. fighter jets over 4 states

Last Updated: Tuesday, April 7, 2009 | 12:17 PM ET Comments215Recommend106CBC News
The pilot of a single-engine plane that was stolen from a college in Thunder Bay, Ont. and piloted across four states has been charged with transportation of stolen property and illegal entry.

U.S. federal prosecutors filed the charges against Adam Dylan Leon, 31, in what was described by officials as an apparent suicide attempt.

Two military jets chased the Cessna 172 before it landed near a small Missouri town.

Adam Dylan Leon was taken into custody after a plane was stolen from a college in Thunder Bay, Ont., and landed near a Missouri town. (CBC)
Local police said the pilot landed the plane on a dirt road around 10 kilometres west of the southern Missouri town of Ellsinore around 8:45 p.m. CT Monday.

The pilot left the scene on foot before stopping at a nearby grocery store, said state police. Once there, he bought a drink and waited until police arrested him 35 minutes after he landed.

"[The pilot] made a statement that he was trying to commit suicide and he didn't have the courage to do it himself. And his idea was to fly the aircraft into the United States, where he would be shot down," Trooper Justin Watson, one of the police officers who arrested the pilot, told ABC television.

He said the pilot "gave me no indication that it was anything other than he was having personal problems and was in an attempt to end his life."

According to the federal complaint, Leon said he flew the plane into the U.S. expecting to be shot down by military aircraft.

The complaint said Leon told authorities he recently was being treated by a psychiatrist.

Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the North American Aeropsace Defence Command, said the aircraft was left alone because it wasn't deemed a security threat.

"I think it goes to — is this person threatening population centers, is he threatening critical infrastructure?"

Leon's neighbour Lorraine Beaudry said the student had recent trouble with a girlfriend but didn't seem depressed.

"He didn't have a lot of friends. He kept to himself, but to know him as depressed? Definitely not," Beaudry told radio station CKPR.

"He was a very nice kid."

Pat Lang, the president of Confederation College, said he had "absolutely not" shown any questionable behaviour.

"He was described as being an excellent student by his faculty members," Lang said.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told CNN that Leon, formerly known as Yavuz Berke, was born in Turkey and became a Canadian citizen in 2008.

Escapade began Monday afternoon
The Cessna 172 was tracked by two U.S. fighter jets before landing on a dirt road near Ellsinore, Mo. The fully fuelled plane was taken from the Aviation Centre of Excellence (ACE), located at Thunder Bay's international airport, at about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Judi Maundrell, vice-president of Thunder Bay's Confederation College, which runs ACE, told radio station CKPR that a person hopped the fence Monday afternoon and took off on an unauthorized flight in the Cessna 172.

The pilot flew the plane across Lake Superior and over Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois before landing in Missouri with about 30 minutes' worth of fuel left in the tank. He travelled around 1,250 kilometres.

As the plane flew over Madison, Wis., the state capitol building was evacuated shortly as a precaution.

Two F-16 pilots from the Minnesota National Guard tracked the plane as it crossed the U.S.-Canadian border, according to North American Aerospace Defence Command.

Fighters from the Wisconsin Air National Guard and the Louisiana Air National Guard later relieved the Minnesota jets, said Norad in a statement.

"The aircraft was pretty erratic," Maj. Brian Martin, a spokesman for North American Aerospace Defence Command (Norad), told CBC News.

"It was going a variety of different directions. It had gone as high as 14,000 feet [4,267 metres], as low as 3,000 [914 metres], so that's why we had to keep tailing it to make sure that there were no safety issues with other aircraft in the air."

The pilot acknowledged seeing the F-16s but refused to communicate with any authorities, and didn't obey their nonverbal commands to follow them, said Norad.

edit found this

"Interstate transportation of stolen property carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Illegally entering the United States carries a penalty of six months prison. "
