Ovechkin... the coolest dude in hockey!!

He hits, he scores, he makes plays, he fights and he never whines... not like Sid the Kid. Not to say Crosby isn't a good player, but I just enjoy everything about Alex Ovechkin. He's always smiling. He truly loves the game. Today I saw an article that he met up the Lebron James at a Wizards game and gave him a signed jersey... just thought that was kind of funny.

Who else matches up to this guy's skills and character? I sure as shit wish he played for the Habs... more than any other player out there.

To be honest, at first, OV bothered me a bit... only because I and most of the audience thought he was going too far with celebrations. We thought he was stuck-up or just plain full of himself. But what it really came down to is his pure and honest love of the game. There aren't too many players out there that are just happy to be playing at a professional level.

Here's when Alexander the Great scored his 50... it was controversial for some. "Did he go too far?" and "Was that really necessary?" were some of the questions that were popping up. Another great player, whose done a lot for the Caps this year... I think he's got almost 30 goals now. They have a great hockey club and have become a team that a really cheer for, along with the Chicago. Of course, if the Caps meet the Habs in the playoffs, well I'll be cheering against them. GO HABS!!! It looks like they're gonna make it after all... Gainey seems to have things figured out and Kovalev has really stepped it up in the last couple weeks. I, too, am very anxious for the playoffs to start.

Off the topic, but still hockey, did anyone watch the Boston game yesterday... Avery was up to his usual antics again... already. What a dumb shit. In previous threads I had said I didn't mind the guy. He's just playing the role he is meant to play, but yesterdays bullshit he pulled on Timmy Thomas was just f'n ridiculous. Kick his ass out of the league now and forever... nobody wants to play with him or against him.

Twenty years ago, if he had done his 50 goal celebration he would have ended up smeared against the boards with Bobby Clark, Robinson, or Gordie Howe or a miriade of others standing over him letting him feel the love. Now players all stand around and watch the game being bastardised. Oh sure there bigger, stronger, faster, better, but they also think nothing of slew footing, hacking, elbowing,kneeing the other guy. No respect. Just big business.

And what about these guys from 20 or 30 years ago... the game was far dirtier than it is now. It was okay to slash and poke and stick a guy. It was part of the game... I mean, come on, they were some dirty bastards. But you are right about the respect. They gave it and got it.

Anyway, this celebration just makes the game more exciting/more interesting. Why is it okay for football and soccer players to do this shit? Actually, what they do is far worse... I watched a clip of a football player recently who got in the cart and started driving it around the field after a touchdown. People cheers and laughed.

I think it's good for the game. Ovechkin is a respectful player. He probably loves the game more than any other in the league right now. He scored 50 goals and was happy about it... big deal.

jac. No I didn't see Don Cherry on that night, but Don does call it like it is. You may not like it but like Simon on American Idol he has the balls to be honest. Yes there were dirty players back then, but they were held accountable by the really tough guys, who usually could play as well. Now if you hit a player hard and clean you have to fight, fighting back then usually was for the cheap stuff. What Evechkin did was cheapen the event. It's team first, then player. On that night he got them reversed. Yes he's a briliant player.

You are right though... again, to an extent. I think it's the bad apples of the game today that ruin it for guys like you. It seems you have a hard time looking past them. I don't think OV cheapened anything. He's just having fun. Look where he came from and look where he is now. He's starting to get involved in his community... in the American culture, everything. He just loves the game and is bring some new OOMPH to it. I say good on 'em.
