Looks like like a poorly judged approach with a excessive speed and sink rate, when he tries to lift off again the left main has hooked the frame on the edge of the deck and pulled her over.

One should note that this guys landing pad is moving at 20+kts and there is significant turbulence that can be experienced in the lee of a ships superstruture, I wonder if they all got out, having experience with helo underwater escape training every 6 months a few years back, I would be amazed if they all got out-maybe with a short term air supply perhaps? Its diffcult to get out when you are expecting to get wet, never mind the sudden shock of a ditching.

Hope they made it

It's called "settling with power" or "Vortex ring". He left it too late to pull in the power and that can be seen from the effect on the water and when it started. The very cushion he needed from the downwash from the blades, came up and over the blades and pushed him down, as opposed to cushioning him. If he was "green" then that is something that can happen. If he was experienced, then he was "hot-doggin'" for the gang and left it too late to pull power.

Isn't what caused the flip called "dynamic rollover"?

Yes, it's dynamic rollover. The marines in the back lost their lives unfortunately. There was no one on the left side (due to config, the left door was blocked) to see that the rear left gear was hung up on the rail.

A good example of vortex ring state is the Sea King crash at the air show in the states. There's a vid of it....everyone lived....it's quite incredible, you can see the FE underneath as it's rolling over.
