avition and raves
So I was asked by a pilot friend to go to a rave party with him this summer. I have never been to one before and he has been to only one. I am not planning to go to was my answer. I do not want to start the " full blown alcoholic vs i smoke a doobie sometimes" debate but i was wondering If anyone out here tried speed at one point in their life and if it affected their flying or jobs and/or how do you deal with it. I'm not looking for medical theory. Just wondering out of curiosity if my friend's experience is a common thing in todays aviation.

I don't think that if it did affect anyones ability to fly that would notice, "Dammit I keep flaring to high, effing speed I did at Summer Love!" probably isn't something someone would say to themselves.
I see pilots everyday I know that have done far worse then speed and they seem to fair well. Not saying I would get in a plane with them, nor would I condone any behavior. If it isn't abused, probably not.

Re: avition and raves
I doubt anyone on here will reply, "Oh yeah, I banged some heroin in my youth..."
When it comes to speed information, well here's a good place to start.

I have known a few truck drivers, kids, and guys that work in shops to use ephedrine.

This is pretty common stuff at raves. From what I hear, if you use it all of the time, you will eventually get a cold because your immune system get all out of whack from lack of sleep and stuff.
IMHO, all things in moderation, and if in doubt, don't.
That being said, I'm having a few pops after my social psychology exam today.

Re: avition and raves
I thought that 'raves' went out of style at around the turn of the century; similar to 'disco' in the early eighties. The underground dances that are based on repetitive electronic music and the use of mind altering drugs are called 'parties' now according to people I know in the DJ biz.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Re: avition and raves
My fiancee has got me experimenting with scrapbook parties, if that helps. Tried a few punches and stencils; probably shouldn't have driven home that night. My only real side effect is that it destroys my will to live. However, it hasn't come up at any of my interviews yet, and I am with a large 705 operator (perhaps only until they read this).
The fantasia party may also be something to explore, especially if you're heading to a place like Voyageur.

Re: avition and raves
Well, I smoked, and inhaled - several times, many years ago. I thank providence for keeping me away from anything more than that, as I have friends who did go further, and never really came back - spent the entire time that they should have been in post-secondaary education in a drug-induced haze... While I do extol the virtues of 'do whatever you like as long as you show up for work clean and sober' I suspect that I'd be a little more restrictive when push came to shove.
Weren't those US pilots who dropped the bomb on the Canadian troops in Afghanistan a few years back hopped up on speed? Doled out in carefully controlled amounts by flight docs, though.

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Twenty years from now you'll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did do.

Re: avition and raves
Just because you're going to a rave doesn't mean you're taking drugs. I've probably been to a couple hundred parties and I never touched a thing.
They got the worst of their reputation around 2001 when the media started picking on them as places where kids go to do drugs and unspeakable things. It wasn't the case, it was a bit older of a crowd, a majority weren't on drugs, and it was probably the friendliest atmosphere you could find. Of course, all the attention became a self-fulfilling prophecy around that time, and the scene grew at a huge rate for a couple of years with some undesirables before basically imploding on itself. It never went out of fashion, it just went back to the way it had been since the early nineties: smaller and less commercial. The scene continues on that way to this day.
It's a music subculture, that's all. There are just as many drugs at a rock concert.
If you get a chance to go to one, go for it. It's the only scene where you can go to an event alone and leave with many honestly great new friends with pure ease. It's a very friendly, honest atmosphere. Plus, the dancing keeps you really fit.
And if you decide to try some chemicals, understand that there are many pitfalls and you have a responsibility to make sure that you are being somewhat safe. There was a group called T.R.I.P. who made this possible, they are probably still around. (edit: they are, http://www.tripproject.ca/trip/ ). (edit2: erowid.org is another must-see) I've seen some people make mistakes that I wouldn't wish upon you.

Re: avition and raves
A rave is defined as a party with techno- dance music that usually lasts all day- or all night. A rave is only stupid when you take drugs or do stupid shit. some people think of raves and start thinking, DRUGS! like speed ,cocaine etc. if you wanna go, then go but remember you wanna be a pilot, responsible for peoples other people lives..give this question to yourself in the mirror: "would i put my life or career in danger for 1 night of "fun" " if your answer is "no" (which it should be) then you should be fine go have fun. but don't be stupid.
I used to be a big party animal in my first 3 years of highschool, but ever since i decided to go into aviation school i've toned it down alot, yes i did smoke a bit of mary-j. but i've been clean from that shit since that day (don't miss it one bit). I still like to drink on the weekends (as any college student) but i do keep it to "moderation is everything" I never drink the night before having a flight the next morning. as its not worth it.
man your talking speed...holy SHIT, talk about putting your life, and/or career on the line, thats just stupid. if you thinking or asking the question here...then i would just imagine what your answer would be to "we should do some speed to keep us partying all night" after about 12-15 pints and at some hardcore rave.
just my 2 cents.

Re: avition and raves
Not quite. The USAF has a "go" pill to combat fatigue in certain situations (we don't have a "go" pill in the CF). It's highly controlled by flight surgeon. It's only authorized and given to single seat pilots for missions over 8 hours or 12 hours for multi-crew pilots.Just another canuck wrote:

It's not Meth, but Dexedrine. Comes in 5mg or 10mg doses.
