Some people like the status. One guy I know has his rege on a vanity plate, but he's only put 200 hrs on the aircraft in the last ten years. I also knew a guy who went practically everywhere in a flight suit, with patches and all. Just a private pilot with a 172.

I simply choose not to overly advertise my involvement in aviation. When people ask what I do for a living; I simply say I work at the airport. The only extra-curricular aviation things I collect and display are books, coins, and artwork that my relatives give me.

Don't get me wrong. I love aviation. I loved it enough to make two professional careers out of it by the time I was 25. But you'll never see an aviation sticker on my car; they go on my tool box. And you'll never see me gracing public places with bars on my shoulders, especially since I don't wear them for work.

I think a vanity plate would look silly on my 25 year old car (no, not the kind you'd ever see at a classic car show). I would try and get an aircraft registration that means something to me though; there are a few still available that have all my family's initials in them.

I tell all the chicks i'm a pilot. Then their all like "oh, that's so cool, take me for a ride" and i'm all "oh, i'll take you for a ride alright! Giggity". It works everytime. Sometimes more than others.

If I ever somehow leak it out, (I use, "I work at the airport" ) but if its mentioned that I fly for a living the reaction is, "Oh so you work for Air Canada" I say, "No", then they say, :"Oh so when do you want to fly commercially"? Like at West Jet or something?
